Not much going on this week? Here’s some more from emails from around 2010. Company decided to take our oldest rattiest trailers and cut them in half to haul bridge beams with. What a PITA these things were. Very difficult to load straight and then trying to get them back together when empty. Most of the loads were over 120’ (we could only go up to 120 on our 80’ stretches)
These are from 2 different jobs, both bridges over I-87. One was near Saratoga and the other was way up near Plattsburgh IMG_2262.png IMG_2263.png

Kinda sketchy. They would always have to hook onto the beam with the crane before we cut all the chains loose. The one picture shows just a few chains which was enough on the jobsite. We’d just put a block of wood between the truck frame and trailer frame (behind the fifth wheel) so the front of the trailer would hang similar to a rgn. Then back up to the other half, there was just a small tongue and slot to help line them up. The sketchy part was that there were only six 3/4 inch bolts to hold the 2 halves together. We got them to add a ratchet binder to each side but the thing was still pretty scary. When you stepped on the brakes you could see the trailer flex at the split.
I can happily report that all of them have since been scrapped

Never had issues in the minor DC/Baltimore and occasional WV winters without any extra weight on the drives…. Never worried about getting a backhaul as I’m sure 99% of those running a moffet-type setup don’t worry about it.

However, weight was of the issue. And I was often over 75k loaded.

I like your pictures but am wondering what the weight limit is on just 2 axles with little wheels on your low deck is. Years ago I had a 30' stepframe van with little wheels just like that although not spread like yours, but it was only for light loads. Can't remember the limit at this distance but a typical load was Kellogg's Cornflakes.

It wasn't mine, I worked for the owner but sometime later my brother and I setup on our own and a big customer of ours made lightweight furniture. My old boss offered to sell us this trailer and the tractor unit with it for £500 payable at £ 100 a month over 5 months. We turned him down after thinking about it because of one thing. It wasn't a 5th wheel coupling but a Scammell automatic setup, as you back under some claws rose up and locked the trailer at the same time folding back and up the landing wheels. We thought if we ever broke down we could not hire such a unit to continue with the trailer.
