You know I thought the same thing-
I think it’s because some of them sandwiches they make have chicken tenders, and some of them have sliced chicken like deli chicken.
I agree with you Sir! -
cke Thanks this.

Since you asked, waiting at the docks to unload a Morris gantry crane.

And this was the Atkinson that I swapped for the Daf. I think you can see why I was pleased.
BTW, Atkis were the bees knees in the days before proper sleeper cabs but take a look at the (false) grille. Empty, naked, not a badge in sight. All Atkis came with a Cummins or Gardner badge, a Knight's head (much sought after and often stolen), A big chrome A in a circle and the Atkinson name across the top. But our boss, had a thing about not advertising others products and, after the customary refusal by Atkinson, or whoever, to pay him a fee for each truck, he had everything taken off.
However, happily by the time my Daf came along he had given up the losing battle.Last edited: Apr 20, 2024

This was my first load with the Daf. Waiting to unload at London docks. My 12 year old stepson is at the wheel. He was my official '2nd Man'. The law said, and maybe still does, that loads over the normal weight or dimensions must have an assistant, but did not apparently specify the age limit of such a person. Econofreight did not like the idea of having people on staff when not always needed so used to ask us if we could find someone. So, young Steve, now in his 50s, earned some holiday pocket money.
Our backload on that day was a large storage tank, over width, and on one part of the journey only, through the county of Bedfordshire, required a police escort. There was a whole convoy of us at a service station on the motorway waiting for the police. The first question they asked me was 'how fast can you go?' They hated escort work so he was less than impressed when I told him 45 mph. My answer to his next question 'can't you go faster than that?' was 'there are at least 16 little tyres under that trailer and each one has 45 mph stamped on it, I can go faster but only if you agree in writing to scramble under the bloody thing to change a blown one'. Thus the whole convoy proceeded at a stately 45 as far as the county boundary.Gearjammin' Penguin, CAXPT, cke and 5 others Thank this. -
@Spardo those are great pictures and stories, thanks for sharing. I only wish we had digital cameras back in the day. I never thought of trying to capture some of the stuff I’ve done (good and bad)
The company I was with gave me a digital camera almost 20 years ago to take pictures on the job sites but I would just let them download them never thinking to save them for myself.
I’ve had quite a few police escorts. They’re getting paid overtime with a 4 hour minimum so the quicker they get done, the more they make.
“How fast can you go?”
Usually left lane only…
One time we were 14’ wide going into South Boston. We weren’t supposed to go in until after 9pm cuz the contractor needed to get all the parked cars cleared from some neighborhood streets at the end of our route. Well the troopers who met us at the Mass/Ct line had no interest in waiting so they just moved us along and we arrived about an hour before we were supposed to. Boy was the contractor ticked off at us! The troopers were done early and we got taken the last few miles by local police.
What a fun eveningLast edited: Apr 20, 2024
