No criticism of you @booley because I see you have plenty of bar tight and suitably protected straps on those girders, but how do you reassure yourself about those beams moving forward in a sudden stop? Not sure I would feel safe without a headboard but, perhaps you have extra protection at the back of the cab? Not sure what my solution would be though, chaining back from the front of them would not have been easy, or even possible. -
@Spardo headboards and headache racks are no longer required. 2 tiedowns within the first 10 feet is the rule. I have 5 straps on the back so there’s 8 straps over 64’ long beams, more than enough…
I see and hear horror stories of loads shifting and it’s always in the back of my mind (no pun intended) so I “drive accordingly”cke, CAXPT, Diesel Dave and 2 others Thank this. -
I'm sure you do, and thanks for the response. Having said all that about headboards I do remember that they were building a new Ford factory in S. Wales I think it was. That was a massive number of beams of all shapes and sizes and of course some stacked up way above any headboard. We had the contract for all of them and they were chained, very tight. All were on 60' trailers and we left them there to be unloaded within their scheduling and bounced back to base for another job.. Every 4th trailer that went in was dropped and then 2 empties were topped up on a 3rd by the cranes on site to bring back. You really needed a rope to throw over to drag those chains into postion. In additon every wheel was roped with double dollies, twice, forward and back. Nothing ever moved. I loved the work, gave a real feeling of satisfaction knowing everything was shipshape. I only left because at that point I had not done continental work and was offered a job elsewhere doing it.

Racks back to Gwinner ND , two weeks off because my dad had a triple bypass, and not one person has brought racks back there, they have a pile of racks that will take at least one more load to get back, bringing steel back here to Litchfield tonight, I am sure that is not on racks, which is fine I actually prefer it not being on the racks, it sits lower to the deck and I get better mileage with it just being on dunkage
