You know a lot more about what you're doing than I do, but how do you get by with all your straps in two areas being that long?

cke, booley, CAXPT and 1 other person Thank this.

Strapping as close as possible to the boards will keep them all tight. If you were to strap in the middle they would be constantly loosening and then tightening as the trailer flexed. You would end up wearing out and probably snapping a lot of straps.

The law only says how many you have to have depending on length/weight. It says nothing about how close or far apart they are.

    Specifically 393.110(b)(3):

    (3) Two tiedowns if the article is longer than 10 feet (3.04 meters), and one additional tiedown for every 10 feet (3.04 meters) of article length, or fraction thereof, beyond the first 10 feet (3.04 meters) of length.

Lol yeah I remember when I first started open deck I didn’t read the regulations correctly and used to measure the 10 feet between the straps. Yeah I got better :3some:

    I didn't. :)
But then again, I haven't had to haul those. I still would put a chain/strap across front and back faces, just to isolate...but that's me. :)
    :banghead:

    cke and booley Thank this.

@Razororange you do a much better job explaining things than I can, thank you.
@FLHT I think that question was for me (?)
    They are railroad ties.
@CAXPT the straps are all situated between the studs welded to the top flange, is that isolation enough ;)

CAXPT, cke, exhausted379 and 3 others Thank this.

Thats why I asked have only seen that metal square on ends of ties.
My oak boards take a beating on big thick wall pipe and and offshore rig beams.
The railroad ties would work well but to heavy to move... Thank you

CAXPT, cke and booley Thank this.
