We do a lot of lumber and used to haul some paint booths that require 8 foot drops, the overwhelming majority of steel, components and the occasional machine tool all do just fine with 6 footers.
As an old man I stick with a stepdeck and 6 footers when I carry them and just pass on the occasional hay load and all of the tall lumber. I’m ok with the money I leave on the table vs the hassle of 18 gage 27 foot lumber tarps with 8 foot drops…I’ll gladly acknowledge I’m just not strong enough anymore to handle those…

Speaking of tarps
Y’all remember the Time you went to grab your tarps for a possible reload somewhere that you don’t usually go, but your six footers were frozen to the deck of the trailer you left them on the other night and it got down to 17° so you couldn’t rip them off the deck so you had to grab your 2 8 footers, and then you drove just far enough to not be worth turning around and going back to your house where you have a 12 x 12 machine tarp brand new still all plastic banded up from the manufacturer to wrap something that’s 6 feet wide and 3 feet high and 7 feet long: so you ended up unfurling an 8’ drop with flap and turning it upside down and inside out to make it cover everything tight?
Y’all remember that?
pretty ####### fresh in my mind.

I had gotten so lazy I toted 4 footers, and coil bags and that was it. At the end anyhow.

The heaviest I’ve seen is 28,320 and that was 100 miles after I had fueled up, so basically full of fuel. If I had to guess, I would say 27,500 lbs with all my stuff and a 1/4 tank.
The billet was advertised as 52,370 lbs, but actual weight according to their scale was 53,020 lbs. -
