Yeah, I know the pain. I was working in the yard on Thursday (moving trucks around for wash and service) and a lot of our highway guys have new 579 automatics. When I would take them to our secondary yard, I noticed they liked to shift very aggressively. Always running up to 1500-1700 RPM then JAMMING the gear into place like it's a race or something.

I was thinking to myself while driving them: "I can surely shift smoother and more accurately than these things". And a couple of them couldn't decide whether they wanted to be automatics, or stuck in manual mode. So I get going after hooking to a new trailer and notice I'm at 2000 RPM in 2nd gear. Then I push the upshift button and get thrown around inside the cab.

Not something I could ever get used to driving. The ride (smoothness and steering) is definitely nice but I don't think I could use one on a daily basis.

Oh GREAT! Now it is going to snow or rain because you washed your truck.

Yeah, I mean, I could float so #### smooth... I loved it. Something I enjoyed taking pride in.

I like to toy with the idea of buying a truck from time to time, but it has to make financial sense. I'm not seeing it right now, so an automatic I drive.

Ever since seeing the associated costs with operating a truck, I've been entirely turned off the thought of ever owning one in the current market. I'll be a company driver for life if it means I get to be home every night, make an hourly wage, work with some fantastic people and have all fuel and maintenance costs completely covered. I tried the OTR thing and it just wasn't for me.

And after driving a 450 Paccar for 4 months, I'm glad I'm back into a proper truck with a 550 MBN CAT.

One of our city/regional trucks has one of these in it:

(For those who can't see it: it's a 2002 6NZ rated to max 650 hp)

It's a monster. It laughs at 130,000 gross and would keep pulling hard past 105 km/h if it had the gearing for it.

Now I know who's to blame for the 3 inches of snow we got today. Supposed to get up to the mid 50s this week.
Lot of road bans went on around here today. I like winter lots more than the muddy mess of spring breakup.

Ours went on last week. No fun when you live on a 5 ton road.

I've got 10 loads of corn to get from a guy on a 7 ton road. Fill the trailer to about 3/4 then drive out to the highway and have him top it off with the cart. Good times.

Valves for a water pump, aluminum coil, granite table, used milk machine on the back. Pic taken in the middle of nowhere in Nevada.
