Can someone answer me a question or two, please.

Will the shipping weight on the bill of lading be a dry weight? Or, since these machines were driven on, will that be the wet weight? Is it safe to assume the weights I was given will be close to accurate?

NEVER assume their weights are correct, my experience is they're usually heavier than is listed.

Very true,. and sometimes by a lot.

I usually use Ritchie spec to get a rough idea,.. then assume at least another 1000 - 2000 lbs for fuel and fluids depending on what machine it is. Picking up machines at ports are always heavier,.. often posted weight does not include implements like the bucket or attachments etc.

We always add 10% to what Ritchie has on their site. That usually gets you pretty close.

This also happens with prestressed concrete. they say it weighs 80-84k and the crane operator on one end is holding 46k.

    Things that make you go Hmmmm (U^Y*% R B )&(^ (^)%&*% )&)&*_* (*(&* ) (!@#

Ok, thanks guys. I'll look up Ritchie's this weekend. I did assume heavier, most shippers seem to lie like a prostitute on rent day.

I was curious about the weights more for securement purposes. The 10,000 lb rule.

I'm sure we've all been there, the load not being as described. I went to move a tractor last fall for a guy. It started out as a narrow front Farmall with a "hedgehog" (his words) on the 3 pt. I showed up to load, it magically turned into a wide front International, loader with bucket, and a bush hog on the 3 pt. Close. o_O

I asked dispatch same questions about weights. His answer? Fuel and fluids would only add 50-75 pounds, don't worry about it.

50 lbs in fuel alone, maybe, since they don't usually put more in than they have to!!
But then, depending on the machine, another few hundred at minimum in hydraulic oil,
plus at least a few hundred for the coupler,
and a bunch more for a bucket!!
And depending on which weight they used, did it include the tires or tracks???

And for those of us that move used machines,
    What else has been added?
Even a yard or more of crap in the belly pans!

    Sometimes you really wonder..

I think the worst are "forestry package" machines, those things are heavy! And usually aftermarket or shop-built, so who knows what it really weighs until it's scaled.

Just the bucket size on an excavator can change the weights from the standard by several thousand pounds.

I did a fellerbuncher last summer. To look at it,.. you'd think,.. naaw,.. that cant weigh more than 60k lbs. Mine scaled out at roughly 90k lbs in the well. And with Carl's advice on making sure I secured the rotator,. I did ok.
