Our hammers always sat upright in a saddle, I ran a chain from the top at all 4 corners down to the bed, that held them pretty well.

I've no doubt you're right. But I'd be awful nervous going down the road with 48,000 worth of coil secured with 5/16 chain.

    You have brass ones.

That's why I put 7 on lol. Just curious why you feel bigger chains would be better? I had more then enough to cover the weight. Are you concerned with chains breaking? I'm not very educated on chains breaking and loads coming unsecured thankfully so I value the input.

I picked up this stuff today, never hauled it before. The guy said everyone usually just straps it. In light of some recent events I decided steel on steel was best cept for the 4 belly wraps I did. Prolly way over done but it feels safe. I put a chain at each board and one at each of the middle sections to get it to bow a little.

First of all, there are far better sources of info here than I, as I haven't pulled a skateboard in 12 years. :)

But the company I did run for only used 3/8"chain, and 1/2" binders.

For coils, I'd want 1/2". One can never have too much on a coil. ;)

I see what your saying but a 1/2 chain doesn't do much good hooked to a 5500# stake pocket.

1/2" chains would be of no benefit on a standard flatbed trailer. The wll of the trailer securement point is no where near a 1/2" chain wll.

Edit: posted same thing as JD 4020

    Nice job.

I like the idea of the belly wraps. :)

It never ceased to amaze me how many people thought all there was to load securement was "oh, just toss a strap or two over it and call it a day. "

One of those same yahoos would likely be baffled at how and why some of the middle pieces are working their way out of one end.

Next size up is 3/8 which has a wll of 6600 lbs. I can't remember what my spools are rated at off hand but I know it's less then that and more then 4700. My chains are the weakest point in my securement so that wll is what I always remember.
