I know the feeling. I had an axle seal leaking oil into the brake drum on a trailer when I was company driver. Been asking for almost a month to get it fixed,.. yeah yeah,.. next time in so and so town. Finally took the trailer into DOT and asked them to inspect it. They put the trailer out of service.

It was an A-hole move on my part,.. but I got that axle fixed.

You have it exactly correct. Weak point is a weak point.

Nothing wrong with using bigger chain in the least. If it makes a person feel better that's alright. I constantly make myself feel better by over doing it.

So all in all I'm glad I posted. Thanks for the roasting it was amusing, also thank you for the people that were helpful!

It's kinda interesting this thread. Some of you are upset I don't know how to chain, some of you say what happened to day of being trained by an experienced person and, some of you say don't trust the employees. A lot of assumptions being made but, very few people willing to help cause I really want to know. I mean that is why I joined this forum to get / give info so people can learn from what I went through. I guess it's easier for some to complain.

We're not complaining. Simply telling a driver who doesn't seem to give 2 f***s about proper securement, the right way to do something. You stated you didn't like using chains. You had no business pulling that load or a flatbed at all if you don't know how to use it. Relying on construction workers to tell you how to secure a load is about as reliable as a Honda Civic telling you how to drive a big rig. I'm sorry, but you have no place here. I'm not upset you don't know how to chain, I'm upset that you come here with this smart ### attitude when someone tells you that you're an idiot.

######## sure but an idiot? That would be someone refusing to learn. If I didn't care I wouldn't of asked for help then. I agree I don't belong here, you guys do this all day long and this was very new to me. When did I say they were construction workers ?

Well the first thing that you need to do is to take the first step. You need to read up on the proper securement as per the DOT regulations before you even get started being trained. If you do not do this then how do you have any inkling of an idea that what you are being shown is even remotely correct. Just because someone has been doing it one way for 150 years and has never been hassled does not mean that it is the correct way.

You need the little green book from the truck stops and I think there is also a cargo securement handbook there too. The green book is also referred to as the bible while the other is a more condensed version. The green book is supposed to be word for word the DOT regulations.

You can download the cargo securement book to your phone for free. A Google search will find it.
