I cut down chains with bad links
Thus I have various tail chains with different lengths

Ok I'll try to explain how I've done it.

Loop the chain around a spool and hook it to itself. Take the other end through the securement point. Then hook the binder on the loose end of the chain past the securement point and then to the chain between the securement point and the trailer.

Then I'd throw the rest of the chain to the other side and do the reverse. It's never come loose the couple times I've done it but I have a lot less slack chain in the middle.

Ok, if you take the binder off one side does the other side stay tight?

    TripleSix Thanks this.

Yep. I still have the slack in the middle. The way I do it is so I'm not hooking the binder to the trailer. The hook on the binder is too small for my rub rail and If I hook it to the stake pocket then I'm not getting full will for the pocket (correct?). So this way I'm getting full wll of the spool.

I think I just use more of the chain. If I ever bought my own trailer it'd have chain pulls.

I've also seen several trailers with suicide coils and they had j tracks in the middle of the trailer. They had 2 chains going up and over the coil. I really like that.

One more thing (for the newer guys):

You will probably read something about how Indirect has twice the WLL of Direct. Why is that? In order for direct securement to be effective, you MUST have an opposing pull. If JD put 4 points on the machine, but the securement on the left side of the trailer is pulling towards the rear, and the securement on the right side is pulling forward, is it properly secured against shifting?

What if JD had all 4 securement points pulling forward, is the load properly secured? The load will shift the first time he brakes hard. When you're sitting on the side of the highway, trying to figure it what to do to get the load from hanging diagonally off the trailer and the dot cop rolls up, he's going to tell you that the load was improperly secured. If it shifts, it was secured wrong.

Do you find it amazing how the guys in this forum can spot securement issues from pictures? A trained eye can spot bad securement from a half a mile away. There are some dot cops that can do the same. I will wager that the majority in here have been stopped in a scale before because the dot wanted a closer look at the securement. Not always a bad thing...sometimes, they just like the way that you secure.

Proper load securement is something we take pride in. It's not just a job, it's a matter of pride. If you haven't, take a closer look at JD's cheater chain and binders. That's custom stuff. You're not seeing that stuff in your Iowa80 catalog. Whether company driver or owner op, we all make custom setups to make our work more efficient.

So question. Your picking up a load of 4 skid steers that weigh 10,500 lbs and only have 10 chains and 10 binders. What do you do?

What's aggrivating is they ship them in vans with no securement.

Pick up 6 snap binders from the nearest truckstop or pawn shop.
