In a bind like that, could he not use his 4" straps and winches to make up the other 6 chains / binders?

I doubt Chewy had the money to buy 6 binders and his company obviously wasn't putting it up.

I doubt it. My regular straps wouldn't have any way to hook onto a machine like that. I can buy just about anything on the truck side at the truckstop so I could have gotten more binders. I did have the wll covered just not the 4 points.

Chewy, I used to get in this spot moving small tractors during grape harvesting season. I always used short chains. Mostly 7' & 13'. I would put 2 short chains (no binders) on one end, each pulling the usual directions. Then, back the machine up til the chains were tight then chain & bind the other ends. 4 points /2 binders.

I've used that trick before. Anybody gotten any grief over it from the law?

Well, in a van if everything is butted up against each other with no room to shift, there really isn't much more you need to do.

You could pallets on either side of them to eliminate any side shift.

I had a bunch of those when I did it, including 1/2 chains roughly 18" long. Those came on handy for securing anything track mounted to a tilt deck.
