I would too. Like Jumbo said, if the strap gets cut, that portable is coming off.

You may want to look into a set of stake pocket winches. The stake pocket winches are more expensive, but are easier to work with and won't come out if the strap gets cut.

Are you saying they are bolted to the rub rail as in there and holes in the rub rail the bolts are sitting in?

I don't like that it's on the rub rail but that's just me. Is the rub rail rated? I hope so for Canada.

If it's actually bolted through holes I would much rather see a section of rub rail removed to accommodate it like this:

If it's just clamped on I would go with a hand ratchet or stake pocket portable as mentioned instead.

He means these bolts. They just clamp the winch to the rail upload_2016-8-5_10-40-54.png

I always take those bolts out for steps ans they just get in the way.
I keep the bolts because they do come in handy on rgns. Put the winch on upside down and lock them in place with the bolts.

I didn't know about the stake pocket winches until recently. 2-3 months ago I needed the portables for a job, I ordered them over the phone from the tarp shop.

I recently acquired a pair of these:

Tighten up the strap, then give it a good whack with the winch bar and tighten again. That is how you get the slack out of the opposite side.
