That's the thing with company policy, it's fine if you are posting in a company forum. Here most of us work for companies or run their own trucks that don't have all those additional little rules, we follow the federal rules and state rules. So spreading your companies policy without labeling it that at the time you said it tends to make us all question it and want to see the law about it. Why? Because we all strive to be the best we can be and we already know the laws.

And a ratchet binder with no thread showing is still adjustable.

Has anyone ever been hassled for not having much or any thread showing?

It sure is nice out here not being babysat by an employer.

That's one of the problems with a forum people can't distinguish between discussion and disagreement like you can in person. Nobody's inflamed or rioting we're just discussing. Skooter summed it up pretty well, if the chains tight it's tight, if it's loose it's loose. Some DOT will tell you to go ahead and tighten it up others will discount that particular chain from your total aggregate WLL (another reason to put on extra securement) but even if your out of threads it's still adjustable because like you said you can loosen and grab another link. I have many times had the binder get tight right as I run out of threads it seems like it wouldn't happen that often but it does, it's usually one of those "great it's not going to get tight and I don't want to take it off and spin it out" moments then it does. Leaving an 1" out might be good practice to be in or a good rule of thumb but it's not law. @skootertrashr6 is right that's why some of us perk up at this stuff, not because we want to argue but because we want to do it right and we learn a lot off of here, I know I have.

I totally agree Scooter again wasnt trying to misinform anyone, rules and regulations always are subjective! I wouldn't be in this particular forum section if I wasn't trying to learn also! Again I just commented on a post no harm intended.

Oh and I didn't want to go on like I had to either but you kept on it without citing the law. What your company mandates has nothing to do with 99% of us.

Not trying to burn you at the stake or anything at all, we all use this forum to help us learn as well. Most of us here in this particular section don't have to deal with the hand holding policies that companies create, we are given the green book and excepted to know and understand it and execute it as a professional.

Now, a bunch of us are company drivers also, our companies just don't have have those additional rules. They give us the resources we need to get the job done, and expect us to do it according to federal and state law. Anything beyond federal and state is because of our own knowledge and applying common sense, such would be in the case of throwing extra securement on something instead of just dot minimums.

I hated the "it's no going to get tight" moments. It always happened on a long pull, so I started keeping a smooth jaw pipe wrench handy.
