Picked this up this morning. 16,000 and change galvanized, 4' across. Dunnage settled a little weird on bunks, I even got them to lift it back up and readjust it. Must be the carpet, it had a very thick underpad. Got the chains on and it seemed rock solid. Appreciate any advice/suggestions. I enjoyed doing it. Lots of up-down on the trailer though.

That's the problem with not using beveled lumber on coils. I only have 1 set but wish I had 2. I may be wrong but the way you have your chains hooked to the stake pockets I would think you'd only get half wll on them. Personally I like to wrap all the way around them like a spool. If you have any firefighter friends ask them to grab you some 4 inch fire hose. Then you can cut it up and you don't have any bulges like carpet will. If your ever anywhere near me just let me know and I've got some for you.

Could wrap the extra chain around your binders especially if it was up and down like you said! Just a suggestion.

Or if they have a hole for it I carried hitch pins. Lot less work for retightening.

I agree with @Chewy352 on the stake pockets, I don't think the way you did it would cut your WLL in half, but I would wrap the whole stake packet and hook the chain back to itself. And yes, definitely get some beveled hard wood for coils.

    Highway Sailor Thanks this.

Company doesn't provide beveled lumber unfortunately, and I don't have access to tools to make it. I knew it would be an issue, but I grabbed the best hardwood dunnage I could find so it wouldn't snap or crush.

Chains in the pockets is how the company wants it. I'm going to bring up the spool around the whole pocket at the next meeting, it's been on my mind for a while, but I missed the last meeting because I was on an early-morning delivery.

I think the company just needs to give us the proper equipment for the job. We need proper friction mats, not cut up hotel carpeting.

    rda2580 and Chewy352 Thank this.

I did after the picture was taken (I tried to get as many pictures as I could when I could get them). The most up-down was the tarping, and getting in around those cattle catchers on the front of the trailer.

Indeed. I would refuse to pick up a 45K coil without the proper equipment. There are a lot of little things the company doesn't realize about certain things that I'm slowly trying to fix. Like the whole pocket thing.

For friction mats whenever you park at a truckstop walk behind the trucks and pick them up for free. The thick rubber mudflap cut in half have many purposes.

I know what you're going through. My company doesn't know half of what I've learned and it can be a battle convincing them.

For the stake pockets talk a truck stop walk and take pictures of flatbed stake pockets where one side is half or all the way ripped off. That's why I don't like it. And show those to your company.

The way I got my beveled hardwood was a shipper that required it.

@Zeviander I've seen bunks made to hold square hardwood at an angle to eliminate the need for beveled hardwood.

Highway Sailor and Zeviander Thank this.
