Nothing wrong with over chaining a load IMO. So long as you aren't holding anyone up that is. If you weren't, have at it in my book.
I ran into one of our other O/O's at Cat this past week. His machine was on his trailer, and the trailer back together when I arrived.
After I broke down, loaded, put the trailer back together, chained the load, put signs and flags on, scaled, got my bills, and then got back to the truck, he was STILL working on that load (Cat 950K)
No help needed when I asked if he needed anything, but I counted TEN 1/2" binders.....holding down a whopping 40k lbs!Hell, he had 2 full length 1/2" chains and binders just on the bucket.
Doubt he ever does the short hauls like I try to do, as he would be broke before the week is out IMO!
BTW, 7 binders and 5 chains is more than legal and safe, and that is assuming 3/8" binders/chains.

I have 5/16ths chain. I know less would be sufficient, but wanted to make sure. Didnt take much more time to throw a couple more chains, just to make me feel better.

If it was legal and safe, then it was good in my book. And as you say, takes a whole 5-10 minutes extra to put them on there.
I haul the same stuff all the time (Cat equipment), so chaining is a super fast deal for me, as I know where they need to be, how many, and so on, before the load is even at my trailer. I have had a few head scratchers over the years though I will say.

Ive had plenty of head scratches. Only been doin this since September 2011, been solo since October. Hauled some Cat, including one small OD. I like Cat. Hoping for another load out of Wamego this week. The wll of 5/16ths is 4700#. Its grade 70 transport chain.
