I have a load of plastic conduit on currently and i have 2 stacks of 20ft pipe. The front one has 1 4" amd 2 2" straps ib the first 6 feet! I used 10 straps total 2 of which are belly. I was questioning putting more on it until I went around tightening them. I decided it was good and not going anywhere.

You're absolutely right about the required way to strap it, gambler, so it really doesn't matter if he could have "been ok" with that load or not, it was an outright violation, period according to the sections of FMCSR that apparently we both read. Although I've read it as the first 5 feet to have those 2 straps § 393.110What else do I have to do to determine the minimum number of tiedowns?

As a caveat, from what I understand, DOT also likes to see 2 on the back within that 5 foot range.... needless to say, a personal experience showed me, that at least with flatbed, that 2 on the back is godsend advice. :D

Enjoy these pics of one of my few screw ups. :D There's a chain (6600 WLL) for backward movement, and two straps on the back piece within 5 feet, and two more forward, one to hold the rack and another on the front part of the piece... 4 straps and a chain for 15,000 lbs..and there were 2 more pieces at that weight. The back piece on the most extreme angle moved only 1 1/2 inches on an angle...the securement kept it from further movement, and the front two didn't move at all. Cop directed me to this narrow dirt road and a hairpin turn...and as soon as I felt the split axle tire catch the edge of the ditch, I stopped...the angle is because the trailer slid into the ditch.

So the point is secure the minimum and add, because you never know the situation it will cover that will come across you. :D

We've been getting down there a lot lately! We have our first contractor from Micco, FL and have had 1-3 trucks in FL per week for the last month or so.

    The Challenger Thanks this.

Relatively speaking, that area isn't terrible freight wise for FL. We need a little time to get a customer base established in FL but it could work out to be a good lane in the future for us. It's kind of the opposite for me as I'm used to thinking about it. From out contractor's perspective, we give him great back haul.
