Yeah, I know SHC, which is why I mentioned that it was WLL restraint values in aggregate in the first post. The 46,000 lb coil, according to DOT/FMCSA regs only needed to have an aggregate securement WLL of 23,000 lbs to pass. I prefer to match weight, is all, as an equipment/safety hedge.

If you read the manufacturers information, though, they do say, if you exceed the WLL value, they do expect you to discard them and/or they are no longer considered usable at those ratings.

This is why I try to match the aggregate WLL with the actual weight of the load. The stresses shouldn't exceed the individual WLL strength or the weight/gforce divisible to each securement unit, and it allows a larger buffer for error with the excess WLL capacity.

Technically according to Peerless's links below, yes, if you exceed/overload the WLL of a 5/16" inch chain (rated at 4700 lbs WLL, @Grade 70) with a weight of 5,000 lbs, then yes, they do expect if that one chain was the only securement item in a stop (shock loading) restraining that weight, then it would no longer be rated at that WLL value.

This is boilerplate language, but it's pretty consistent across manufacturers.

Actually, that trip chain does count in the calculations of preventing forward motion. With all 4 chains, running diagonal, Xing through the coil, they are indirect tie downs (running from one side of the trailer to the other) and carry full WLL, giving 26,400 pounds. C's or horseshoes, whichever term you desire, reduce the WLL by half as both ends of the chain are attached to the same side of the trailer, and are considered the same WLL as a direct tiedown. Using the same 4 6,600 lb WLL chains, if 2 were X'd and 2 were C'd, that would yield a total WLL of 19,800. If all 4 were C'd, the WLL would only be 13,200 lb. Not counting the trip chain.

In the photo, between the 4 X'd chains and the two 4 " straps, he has 37,200 lb of WLL, not counting the trip chain.

It just amazes me how everyone interprets the regs differently...

Securement regs are pretty cut and dried, not alot open to interpretation. Unlike many of the other regulations.

Two load bars, one heavy duty front surge bar and I am secure.

Oh, and a pad lock to include the security tag.
