I have never hauled a load of pipe like that before, so your saying to put dunnage down then chain the pipe stakes?

I hauled some loose drill pipe a couple times. They didn't stack it against the stakes they were just there so it didn't roll off when loading.

They had me lay a chain on the deck fastened to the stakes. Then I took a ratcheting binder and snugged it up.

Did that so if you had the pipe moved on you it wouldn't rip the stake pockets out of the trailer.

I always throw those on, just to keep the pipes from leaning out. Usually when you chock the pipe, it shouldnt move after you strap it down. Theoretically at least. I didn't see the posst mentioning it was aluminum tho...on steel pipe i like to throw a chain around and squeeze it all together. :)

That is alot of load and not enough stake. Did the stakes bend or did the pockets give out?

Yeah you always throw a chain and binder on the bottom to help support the pipe stakes. That little pocket isn't going to do much. Another row of dunnage mid way high and another chain and binder holding the pipe stakes together would have prevented that.

    Look at the bright side.

Nobody would park next to you and you could have a quiet nights sleep.

My pipe stakes are 4" tube and 4" channel. I hook a 16' chain on the channel stake on 1 side, run the chain across the deck and around the tube and back to the other side. Then hook the binder to the channel steak and tighten it up.

This is to keep your stake pockets from ripping off when they load/unload the pipe. They usually lower the pipe between the stakes and then back up and put pressure on the loading side stakes and lower the pipe. I've also had them just dump the stuff on the trailer and hope it doesn't break my pockets. That place got to unload the pipe and I left
