Yeah, screw that. Last military load I hauled was a 9 foot wide amphibious marine vehicle from Fort Lejeune down to the Charleston harbor. That one paid close to $3 a mile because it was barely oversized. Most of the guys pulling out of there didn't bother with oversize signs since the wide part was up near the top and neither did I. Easy run but short.

I heard from the other O/O's down at Charleston how tennessee steel haulers cut the rates on military loads a while back. All I could say was why would you do that?

I did like the humvees cause if their dock was hard to get into at the smaller bases, and it was a lot of the time if it wasn't blocked off entirely by some schmuck, I could just drop my ramps off the stepdeck and they could drive them right off. Made for some nervous privates though. :biggrin_2559:

It's not asset based carriers that are the problem, in general, with military freight, its the brokers, then you add in the Menlo situation. Unless it's a spot bid, or something specialized like that Hazmat tanker load needing TWIC, and it's too cheap for me.

I would not be happy with that load.
Most job sites round here would refuse to off load it.
Most would not even let you in the gate.
Picked up a few of them in my time , but back then safety was for sissies.

The load I had paid $3.75 to the truck out of MS. So it wasn't bad at all and I got in at 8am and was out by 10. When I left tho all the trucks that had been behind me were gone. Then I found them all sitting at alongside the road on the out gate. Apparently there were so many of us that the Port Authority had to tell them all to leave and come back in one at a time. I'm glad I got in the receivers hate before that!!!
