And they’re one of those brokers with a too familiar name. Hard to keep it straight when you’re booking in a hurry on the spot market. Sunset Sunrise Suntek Sunthis Sunthat
I have posted this on the ask an Owner Operator thread and thought I would try here too... Please tell me a good story of
Can't speak for everyone. My buddy, by way of my account while I was out for the birth of my son, paid $7,590 in detention and reimbursement for a ticket to take a large gearbox out to a site. It worked out to about 38% percent of the driver pay on that load. Everyone, from us to the site to the shipper was tracking Monday delivery. Turns out someone on the site forgot to let the crane company know. Dude sat until Friday, and then nobody on the site let DOT know he was coming up the road. It's a restricted access site, so... Ticket. We took care of that, and paid him for the time. By the time we were all done and said, carrier was paid $19,590 for the move.
Ouch, and I'm willing to bet that you fellas learned a valuable lesson from it. Glad to see though that there's still some honor left out here, thanks for sharing that...
Well ultimately, the end customer wound up being billed for the difference. It was a fun goat rodeo to walk back into, though, after two weeks off for the birth of my kid. And yeah, neither I nor my colleague were going to stiff the driver for something that wasn't his fault at all. I'd have eaten it, if it had come to that. If I'm expecting you to do the job in a reasonable time frame, it's fair for you guys to expect to be offloaded in a reasonable time frame, or be paid for your time. I try to be pretty reasonable on accessorial charges. I see detention most often, and that infrequently. But it's part of the job. Don't know if you any of you guys have ever had the distinct displeasure to load at Womble Pipe Coaters in Houston, but they're my most frequent violator of "Can't load in a reasonable timeline." It's pure ridiculousness. If it wasn't that I had a really good customer who occasionally buys pipe from them, I would avoid it like the plague. But in the last fifteen or so loads out of there, I've had two that didn't result in significant detention charges.
Just an FYI any smart O/O or independent will NEVER share a good broker with anyone. No offence but it's just business, as there is always someone who will under bid you. With that said, EVERYONE will share bad brokers
