Not a question of bad brokers but bad companies and owner operators. In my opinion every broker my comany deals with is worthless fron CH robinson to Land star, PLS, Artisan...etc etc. Then i really thought about it.....it isnt the broker but the idiot that is accepting the .70 CPM load that is to blame...we cant blame the broker, I mean if I could put 50% of the load revenue in my pocket for doing nothing I sure as hell would.....######### hauling this cheap freight are the ones to blame....so you ask for good brokers.....I tell you there are none but we created this ourselves

Was curious as to why you applied for your authority if you are planning on working under some one else's.

Having your own authority doesn't tie you into just anybody. You may reduce your cost to the company you're leasing to. It may also open other doors of opportunity to you. You're in the drivers seat instead of being in the hot seat.

I have my complaints about the lack of transparency in ALL broker contracts, but I have to report a horrible TQL load, part of which (gulp...) was my fault.

I found this load going from Ontario, CA to Stockton, CA, which was vaguely described on a load board. I called the broker, and they wanted to pay $500- for what was claimed to be "under 30,000 lbs", but this was printed on the confirmation contract, until I demanded it. They wanted me to wait a day for p/u but weren't willing to provide weight, p/u number, nor shipper address until I called the next day. At my insistence, they put 28,000 lbs on the revised confirmation that was e-mailed to me.

The next day, I called in and got the address (which was close), and soon found from the shipper that the load really weighed in at 43,000 lbs. So, I called the broker to negotiate a higher rate. He whinned and cried, and finally, I accepted a raise to only $550. After I loaded, the BOL said TQL $700-, which suggested that he lied about the freight cost to him.

I drove this heavy load of bleach home, having to sit on it during the weekend in my own town of Stockton. When I went to p/u my trailer, the brakes were locked up, and I had to fix them. So, I arrived late to the grocer distribution center, requiring me to reschedule with the broker.

The broker called me the next day with an appointment--for two days after the original. Meanwhile, I had called back to the shipper, due to the broker's seemingly long delay in contracting me, who had called me with the same appointment in like half the time it took the broker.

At the time of the delivery, lumper fees and duplicate BOL became an issue. I had asked about the lumper, and was told by both the broker and the shipper that none was needed. The shipper had not given me two copies of the BOL, but fortunately, the clerk decided to help me and violated his own company policy--by making a photocopy of the BOL.

After delivery, 13 cases of bleach had leaked on themselves, so I had to call my broker again for an RMA# according the to the BOL procedure. After two hours of waiting, I called the shipper direct and got the RMA# immediately and was told to discard the leaky bleach cases. Sometime thereafter, the broker called me and yelled at me for "going behind his back" to get the RMA#.

The broker told me that I was "just a driver" and not even good at that. I told him is job was useless for the lack of timeliness, and he could be replaced by a computer. I was told I wouldn't get any more loads from TQL because I was the worst driver they ever had--Think twice before accepting a load from Total Quality Logistics. This broker was a lunatic who lacked all manner of resourcefulness, especially when delivery problems arise.

I've had good luck with TQL. I've hauled over 20 loads for them and no problem. I think you can get a bad load from just about anyone. I don't think brokers in large companies go to the same school and are taught how to screw a driver. I'm sure there are bad brokers in every company who don't do the right thing.

I frequent a local restaurant and I had bad service twice from the same waitress. After that I would ask for a different section. I still like the food but will avoid a certain person.
