A recruiter that I talked to the other day said they do per deim (if i'm saying it right) and that it is mandatory. Reading another post on per deim I see it can go both ways but that it really benefits the company more and causes your social security to be lower?!?!? Recruiter also said they give us a $40 advancement on food but that they get it back when we get paid every week. What are people's thoughts on that. Is that the norm with most companies?!?!?

Are you talking about Western Express? If so, I can say that is how they are set up, but not every company is that way no, and its $45 for every load you do if you are talking about Western Express, not every week, so if you get a 2000 mile trip and absolutely need that $100, your outta luck. So as far as advances in general goes, yew, most companies are setup that way. Advances do not hurt your net income, you just get it sooner than later, but at the same time, an advance can be hurtful, so only use it if you get a short short week.

Per Diem, yes, your SS would be lower because you don't have to pay taxes on it. With Western Express it is .14 cents a mile or so. Per diem is suppose to help compensate on the expense of working away from home.

Per Diem not only effects your social security, but also your reported income if you are trying to qualify for a home loan.

The fact that the company says you have to take this deal, tells you all you need to know about the company. I don't care about how nice the trucks are, or anything else they distract you with. A pile of dog crap does not taste any better, no matter what else you put on the plate with it.

Find another company now, or kick yourself later. Your choice.

Per diem being taken out of your check will charge your social security benefits, your workers compensation, your credit worthiness , disability benefits etc. There are also companies charging .01 or .02 per mile to manage your per diem and there are people letting them. It's insane. Never take per diem from a company!

You can claim the per diem on your personal taxes, you get all the benefits without losing anything.

The company forcing per diem is trying to lower their cost in employee related taxes. As a truck driver you are eligible to claim something like $36 a day for every day you are required to take your 10 hrs rest period more than 150 miles away from home. In my case I took 7 days off through out the year. 349 days x $36 a day was a $12,564 write off for me. I am probably explaining this wrong so I hope someone else can correct this. If you made 30,000 in the a year, with the per diem claimed on your taxes you will lower your taxable income to 18,436.

Bad bad bad idea! I am with a company that pays per diem and its horrible. Not only do you not qualify for the estimated $18k a year write off but because your pay stubs are going to have YTD earning for half of your pay and YTD "reimbursements" for your non-taxable pay, you're going to have a hell of a time proving your income for any loan you try to get. Avoid per diem at all costs.

Perhaps the Internal Revenue Service should look into these trucking companies and do a TOTALLY COMPLETE AUDIT on them.
