You are correct i spent 26 years in the service. Drove my 1st truck (my father's, illegally) down the back roads of SE AZ in '87. Drove my 1st truck in Navy in '94 and picked up CDL along the way in early 2000.

My 1st civilian (OTR) company was picked solely on the information contained on their website, conversations with the recruit and how I was treated during onboarding/ orientation. I was treated well, not a mega but related to them. I left on good terms and if they could have kept the miles up, it may have been a different outcome. But I allowed myself to be hired away by my 2nd company (local) and if I'd know they had a record of overweight violations I would have asked them why. So I left immediately when they implied they wanted me to run heavy and refused to pay for cat scales. The 3rd company (OTR) was a guy with 3 trucks I made good money and had no complaints other than his brokers struggle to get me miles and when the truck he had me running had mechanical issues he couldn't handle the repair cost and now I'm seeking and so far dodge a bullet that has opened my eyes.

So I came here to sharpen my research skills so I don't jump in bed with a company who is unscrupulous or likely to fail.

Numb, FullMetalJacket and 201 Thank this.

I have a son that was EO for his 6 yrs. active duty. Got out and pulled reefers coast-to-coast for year or so, then decided trucking wasn't for him. He's a police officer now working a drug dog. Loves it.

Give him a hearty "Can do" and an appreciation for his service, both military and LEO from me. I have a special place in my heart for those who serve others. LEOs don't get near enough respect these days and it really gets to me.

I would recommend only working at a company AFTER you talk to drivers, no exceptions. Imagine picking a restaurant that you will eat every meal for the next year, but not asking any other "customers" about their experience. Don't do that. Any company that wants you to stay with the company will put you in contact with current working drivers IF YOU ASK THEM. It's not the companies job to inform you. That's your job.

I looked at James H. Clark & Son website. Doesn't show much on accessorial pays. I'd ask about those, in case some accessorial pays aren't showing on the website.
