Firstly you are not being combative. As for your friend? He needs to start playing the lottery because he has good luck.

The part about local paying lousy is totally false to. It all depends on your area. In my area OTR can't even compare with the local jobs. In other areas the opposite is true.

Just because things worked out a certain way for one person, doesn't mean that's how it truly is.

Now you are being accurate. This the truth of the matter. Perhaps where you are this is true but generally it is not. Every area is different plus everything is constantly changing. What may have been the case 10 years ago is not true now and the reverse.
Overall local jobs that pay well are difficult to find. Everybody wants one or at least a lot of guys do.
You can get a local job in Miami. You will need Spanish and you will probably be working a nursery for $300 a week. Typical.

Sometimes there are decent local gigs if you dig around They don't advertise it. I found a local tanker gig with Waccamaw, but am shooting for Superior carriers instead. I like that they have more terminals and if I my wife gets a job transfer, there's a higher chance I can stay with Superior.

Still haven't gotten on with Superior but I am in the process.

It really can be a crap shoot, but if you dig around, often times you'll be surprised at what you find. A lot of folks in my class jumped on the first job offer.
If you're patient and willing to dig, you'll find sonething that works for you.

I learned during my recent job searches that "lousy pay" or "it doesn't pay much" are relative terms. My Wife and I together have never earned more than $94K a year...my best ever earnings in a year was $47K. That's chump change to some other folks I know. I was recently offered a job (not driving) doing technical support where my Wife works but they told me "it doesn't pay much".

It pays better than where I worked last year. So, how much we consider to be good pay or lousy is highly variable. I am still trying to decide if I want to try driving for a living.

Some great information in this thread and I am grateful for it. Thank You.

I read that Performance is a Terrible Company to work for. OP do some research on the best companies to drive for.

Regional may get you home once a week, but maybe only for a 34hr reset. I like OTR and stay out 2 months at a time, but as my parents hit their 80s a regional gig maybe in my future. Even one day a week to run errands and ferry them to appts would be sufficient.

You would have to decide what you need.
