I have an appointment to see a podiatrist on Monday for a toenail which keeps getting delaminated and shredded. I have tried keeping salves and Bandaids on it, but it's back to being bloody more often than not when I take my shoes off. My shoes aren't rubbing on the nail (I would feel it). This happens whether I am in sneakers or work boots. I worry it will eventually get infected, so I wanted to talk to the doctor about getting the nail removed. If we go that route, how do I protect and keep my toe uninfected while it heals? I have my boots/shoes on for maybe 10+ hours at a time. Work requires closed-toe shoes and some properties want work boots, so I'm in boots most of the time. Also, do I have to tell my employer I am doing this? Would they bar me from working? I'm a temp driver and I need the money.

You want it to get as much air as possible, so just put the boots on when you get out of the truck at your customer. No reason you can't switch to an open toed shoe when you are driving.

If I were you I would go to see a specialist. Someone who specializes in feet, hands etc. don't waste your time with a doc who thinks that giving you a drug antobiotic is the ultimate solution.
He should have referred you to a specialist at the very least.
You need to find the root cause of your dilemma.
Then you can make a decision about what's to best way to clear up your problem.
    Good luck

The root cause is that I was diagnosed with a serious illness in 2011 and I was operated on and treated for it from 2011 to most of the way through 2012. The drugs messed up a few things and my nails are one of them. I haven't grown decently strong nails since then so I keep everything trimmed short. That's about all I can do to take care of them.

I would do what the doctor suggests on healing and I wouldn't tell your boss.

And by the way, I threw up a little in my mouth. Thanks for the pics!

I had ingrown nails so bad the podiatrist said I was weeks away from losing my toes.

You cant wear open-toed shoes whil driving. If you get the wrong DOT officer that could be a ticket.

Granted, sometimes I get a bad itch on my foot and I'll drive barefoot for a bit. [emoji14]
