I was wondering if anyone out there has knowledge of the Detroit Diesel Series 60 engine (12.7) in my KW?
My truck is totally unrestricted but still has that goofy HP splt...400 something on the throttle but 500HP while on cruise...
Where is the typical power curve on this engine?
I was bob-tailing Sunday and...
I was passing someone and noticed I was doing about 73mph as I passed them....so I pushed the throttle all the way to the floorboard and held it there to see how it would continue on..I wanted to see what power it had and what it felt like during an open stretch of highway.
I was in top gear (13) and running about 1500RPM - the turbo spooled up, and the gauge showed about 30 something of boost but no 'real' power. I was still accelerating but no feeling of OOMPH behind it...I maxed the speedometer out for a bit and then backed off.
Guys, I am not whinning or complaining - just asking a question out of sheer curiosity.....
I have really good pulling power through all gears (ok, not like a CAT but as good as it gets)...and no other issues with the engine.
Someone suggested having the shop set the HP to 500HP all the time, and KW told me they would for $125...but not sure thats a good idea or not.

very good idea :mine was set to the split rating and it was a pain in the but. when you need the power and you are in the gear box you don't have and when you are cruising and don't need it you have. $125 is a deal. i paid $500 at a det shop.
better idea: i had mine turned to 650 with 2050 torque and it is awesome. this will walk off and leave my 600 hp cat, and i mean leave.
55 lbs boost with the factory turbo and i am averaging 7.6 miles to the gallon pulling a conestoga. -
The torque and power on your 12.7 will be from 1450 RPM on up. The best fuel mileage will be around 1600 RPM with a heavy load.

$125 was for simple ECM changes. $500+ was for changes requiring a Detroit Password (and Horsepower)....

What is the torque setting on your engine? If you're 1550 or above, you won't notice the HP, as it's all in the top rpm range. Mine was a 375/450 at 1550 torque. It did all I wanted, and I never changed it. It out started off and out pulled an identical KW, with the exact same load, execpt he had a 3406. He couldn't believe a 375 Detroit would out pull his in the mountains. If the overhead is right, and you learn where to shift the gears, you will be alright. Torque means more than HP.

What did they have to do to get that kind of HP and Torque out of that motor? I have one thats 500HP and would like a little more grunt out of it.

To get more power, you can put a fuel cooler on the fuel return line.
If you get an upgrade you have to check the clutch, drive line, transmission, and rear gears. Nothing about more power from an old engine comes free. Just a thought!lego1970 Thanks this. -
ecm programming, unhook the wastegate, header wrap on turbo and downpipe, better air filter, high flow mufflers, basic hot rod stuff you already know. more air in ,, more air out. higher horsepower motors don't require upgrades to the running gear, if the running gear is in good shape and is maintained. higher horsepower does require knowing a considerable amount more than the average steering wheel holder about your truck. not throwing mud at anyone on this forum and this post. it was the tranny people who held up the stock offerings of high hp motors , not because the trannys would not hold up, but because they couldn't build them to sit behind high hp motors while idiots sat behind the wheel. other words , they had to build better trannys for warranty, not for use. i have a friend in GA. pulls nearly 100K daily and he is averaging nearly 7. he's turned to 600 on the same motor, ddec 4. we seem to have hijacked this post, sorry. johnny

and johnp3 is right on the money. you need to check , actually you should already know , it's your truck right, if it is in proper order. drag racing from stoplight to stoplight really ain't what this is about . it's using the power properly and in moderation. ride with your foot on the floor all day, no matter what you are driving and you will soon find it to be very expensive, at the pump and the parts house. johnny
