Logs-You Rock.
This makes the most sense of anything I have seen yet. I think I may be confused on the split breaking. I just thought that was taking a 2hr and an 8hr instead of a full 10. I didn't think you could split it any other way. Also you said something about extending the 14th hr. You mean he drives for 5, sleeps 8, then his 14 hr will start over? Oh, and does the 8hrs have to be in the sleeper? Or is this when he can eat etc? -
Awwww thanks

That powerpoint is showing you the 11 & 14 hour rule only. I forget what all I covered in it exactly. Like other little tips such as you can be on line 4 passed the 14 th hour as long as you don't drive and you get a 10 hour consecutive break before you drive again.
Split breaking: I have an example of split breaking and some where here on a recent discussion of split breaking/11 & 14 hour rule I gave a new tip on calculating the 11 & 14 hour if you are split breaking. To split break you MUST understand the 11 & 14 hour rule first!
To split you remember this!
Once you enter lines 3 or 4 that starts your 14 hour rule.
The ONLY ONE WAY TO DRIVE PASSED THAT 14 HR MARK is to have 8 HOURS IN THE SLEEPER (YES THE 8 HOUR MUST BE IN THE SLEEPER).
All you do is count over 8 hours from your "original" 14 hour mark (marks very important if you split break) and that's when your "new" 14 hour will end. The driving time from when you first started to that "new" mark you can only total 11 hours until you get a "2" hour break.
FEW EXAMPLES IF THE 2 HOUR BREAK COMES FIRST.
If you start your original 14 hour and only stop for 7.75 hours you MUST stop # your original 14 hour mark and take # least an 8 hour break.
If you stop for 5 hours during your 14 hr when your "original" 14 hour is up all you have to do is take 8 hours (gaining 2 hours out of that 5 you lost earlier).
Once you have completed an 8 & 2 hour break you do this:
If you are coming OFF the (so you just finished one of the 2 or 8 hr breaks but have both breaks)
2 hour break : you will go to the "END" of your 8 hour break and count over 14 hours.
8 hour break: you will go to the "END" of the 2 hour break and count over # least 22 hours (this will keep you legal if you just do 22). But lets say you took an 8.5 hour break, then you would count over 22.5 hours. (you count over 14 + # of hours you spent in the sleeper).
Driving time is figured like this:
Add up all line 3 (driving) time "BETWEEN" the 2 & 8 hour break and subtract that from 11. That's how many hours you can drive after your
2nd break and follow the same exact steps above for any "split" break after that.
YOu can split break all year long without a 10 hour break. Just make sure you study before doing it and DON'T give UP! It's really the easiest math you can ever learn and REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY HELPS YOU OUT! THE COMPANY OUT (IF YOU DO IT RIGHT) AND THE CUSTOMERS YOU AND THE COMPANY ARE SERVING!
There is a sheet on split breaking. I know it seems like allot of reading but that's the best I can do via computer and to make sure I cover it all I had to do allot of typing so study it make sense and it works
.
I'm glad I can help and I know many get frustrated (as I did) learning split breaking but honestly if you complain about being stuck somewhere for 2 hours or longer during your 14 hour period then you SHOULD WANT to learn split breaking because you "can" gain them 2 hours back later on. It might also keep you from not taking a load if you know how to split.
Ok gotta goherlsone, oldcornbinder and CottonEyedJoe Thank this. -
Examples of the 34 hr reset rules would be helpful. Thanks and great work on the powerpoint presentation. Very nice!

Thanks, Boy a lot of different answers !!! Like I said I am ONLY a truck Owner. I have my truck leased to a company so thier safety department audits the drivers logs. However I get two different answers there too. That is why I am asking a Retried DOT Officer. I am just trying to help this driver spent his time wisely. I feel that since he mis understands the rule, he logs times that he could just flag. So as I understand it the 14 hour window is just like punching a time clock you have to do all your reguired work within that 14 hrs. You can drive 11 and all other activitives you do within that 14hrs counts towards your 14 hours. So the 15min for restroom, 30 for directions, etc, etc IF DONE during the 14 hr window COUNTS towards your 14 hrs NO MATTER what line you draw it on??? If this is true will it ALSO count towards your 70 NO MATTER WHAT line it is drawn on. My driver was taught that anything on line 1 or 2 during your 14 hr window Will Not count towards the 70 but will count towards the 14. Anything on 3 & 4 during the 14 hr window will count towards the 14 and 70. So he is not concerned with how much time he logs on line 1 & 2 as long he logs at least a 8 & 2 or 10. If he logs unnessary time during his 14 hrs won't it make his 70 hrs add up faster? To Many Questions not enough mind !!!!!!!!!
