I talked to the recruiter for the school I want to attend, because I had some concerns about being able to get a job after being trained. He said fill out some applications and try to get prehired before starting, good or bad idea?

Excellent idea. A pre-hire letter is merely something that states a carrier would be interested in looking at you after you complete training. It gives you the assurance that there is a possibility of a job after your school. Get as many as you can - just so you have options.

There are a lot of bad actors in the truck driving training business who will take your money knowing there is something in your background that will prevent you from ever driving commercially for a living...

Remember, a prehire is only worth the paper it is printed on, but...
It is a good way to get your application to the top of the list once youare in school/have your cdl.
Remember, be 100% honest on the prehire...it is usually a simple screening, not a background check....
If you have any specefic reason you fear getting hired...such as criminal history, job hopping, or physical limitations, talk to the recuiter directly...I think it safe to say they are just looking for the big red flags on prehire....such as tickets, convictins, location of residence, etc.
    Good luck.

If the school said that then you are already headed in the right direction. As stated, as long as you are honest on your application and receive a pre-hire, then you know you fall under their hiring criteria. There are no guarantees for employment, but it's a sure way of knowing you are investing in school for a reason!

Thanks to everyone who has responded so far! My only concern is that I may get a bad refrence from my former employeer. My last ticket was 1982, only accident was 1979, nothing else on driving record so thats not a problem, just worried about maybe getting a bad refrence.
