Hi everyone, not really new to this forum but it has been a while and forgot my previous username. I started running my hotshot truck last April, 3500 Cummins with a 40ft gooseneck registered for 38k. I'm trying to work through the winter this year but we have had some ups and downs. I have been stuck in San Antonio, TX since last Thursday and having trouble finding a load...usually Texas is really easy to get out of. I'm wondering if all of this crazy weather might have something to do with it. Anyway, we have missed out on 2 or 3 really good loads to Canada since I have been stuck here with the latest going from Houston to Edmonton, AB for almost $4 per mile.

I have tried searching Google and this forum for a good list on what is needed to be prepared to enter Canada but have found mostly jumbled information. I already have an enhanced drivers license and know that I need to include the provinces in my IRP. I have seen things about manifests are now electronic. Do you need to create some kind of account for that? What other numbers/things do I need to be fully prepared to go trucking in Canada as an owner operator?

    Thanks for any help,
    -Rob

You have to fax all your paperwork to your customs broker,so they can pre-clear you.
You will need a PARS sticker with the barcode and have it on the bill of lading.

BOL and Customs Declaration page which states the amount of the shipment needs PARS on both

You will need a SCAC code for your company in order to apply for PARS.

you need to setup accounts with ACE/ICE that will get $250 for both, takes up to two weeks
you need SCAC code, around $60 yearly, takes up to week
and you need Canadin carrier code (this is Canadian SCAC equivalent) takes up to two weeks
then you need to order PAPS/PARS bar code stickers from some of autorized print companies, that will take $400-$500, print + shipping up to two weeks

Just come over to me, owner-operator and you will receive this for free

Just putting the provinces on your cab card does not give you authority to run here. You will also need a CVOR or NSA certificate. I can only speak for the CVOR - I am based in Ontario and this CVOR is good all across Canada. If you are based in Alberta the equivalent is NSA certificate ... maybe someone from AB will chime in? The CVOR takes 21 days from their receipt of application to for them to mail it. Have to keep a copy of it in your permit book. If you are coming to Ontario, be sure to have your truck set to 65 mph ... with US plates they are more likely to check ... For Manitoba and west, don't take a spread axle there unless the gross weight for both axles combined is 9,100 kg (20,000 pounds) total. They only like 244" trucks in the west also (without permits). See why it pays good now?
