I have a friend who has a "B" license & wants to get his CDL A but he is on some potent prescriptions like oxycotin or oxycodone & a few others. He wants to know if a company wd hire him & also is concerned when he is out on the road how he can get his RX re-filled. They won't give him any more than 30 days at a time. Are these drugs a no-no in the trucking industry?

I know there is a DEA list of perscription drugs, banned for use while driving commercial vehicles, does anyone know where to find the list on the internet?

Story about prescription meds that happened to me about 18 years ago.
I was taking a mild blood pressure pill daily, prescribed by my Doc. Had a normal brown pill bottle from drug store with my name on it, all perfectly legal and normal. I also had bought a small package of EXCEDRIN head ache tablets at the grocery store. The EXCEDRIN was in a small plastic package, had 2 pills in it, maybe an inch square in size. Cost 89 cents, I think.
Well, I decided to put the un-opened package of EXCEDRIN in my pill bottle, easier to keep track of, and keep all my medicine together. Made perfect sense to me.:yes2557: But not to the Florida DOT officer that checked me one night.
I was leaving Florida on I -75, back before the huge new coops were built. All they had was a very small building for scales and DOT to use.Scalemaster weighed me , came on loudspeaker and told me to pull over. As I did , DOT officer came out, asked for my log books, and noticed my pill bottle on the dash, where I kept it. Nothing to hide, good place for it to be. In plain sight.
He asked to see the bottle, and I handed it to him, knowing all was on the up and up. Boy, was I wrong. :biggrin_25510:
He took the top off my pill bottle, and went into overdrive talking. Told me to exit the vehicle, I was being detained on a drug investigation. I almost laughed, until I saw how serious he was.
Told me to proceed to the scalehouse, and take a seat. I had no idea what to think.
There were several others in the building, one was another DOT and the other the scalemaster.
He quickly told me I was in trouble for violating a Federal law making it illegal to carry one type of drug in another container. He said by placing the un-opened EXCEDRIN package in the pill bottle, I had broken the law.:biggrin_25513: I laughed. and tried to explain it was just easier to keep it in there, and the pill bottle was in full view on my dash. I had nothing to hide, but he was not listening.
I saw the Scalemaster roll his eyes, as if to say "WHAT IS WRONG WITH THAT? ".
Then the officer told me he did not believe my blood pressure medicine was really that, it looked like dope to him.
Well, I was starting to get a little worried about then. Knowing I was 100 % legal, but he was talking serious.
Finally, he decided to call a friend of his at a local drug store, and get him to describe what my pills should look like.
He reached down and picked up a phone book, and started looking through it.
Finally he asked the other fellas if they knew the name of a certain drug store, he could not find it listed. Told them he had looked under " F-A-R-M-A-C-Y" but could not find the number.{ The correct spelling is "PHARMACY"}.
Upon hearing this , the other DOT officer walked over, picked up my pill bottle, handed it to me, and told me to have a safe trip, sorry I was detained, but they had recently had a class on recognizing illegal drugs, and the other officer had gotten carried away a little.
Just another day in the life of a TRUCKER.

Guess I would be in deep &^%$ then. I have drugs mixed in bottle.

One round, other oblong. Both the same drug. One is name brand other is generic.

Left my scrip at home, had to purchase on the road. Just poured em all in the same bottle when I got home.

Guess I'll have to settle for a rectal. Cuz I ain't carrying 2 bottles.

These are the regulations and they are a joke. All it says that you are not allowed to take any drug that is illegal and you can take any other legal drug if a doctors says it's ok to drive. That's the government passing the buck. The whole responsibility is on the doctor. It's up to he or she to say if you can drive or not. If you can convince your doctor you're ok to drive while you take a narcotic then it's legal. However, most companies will have their own restrictions as they should.

As a driver it's your responsibility to inform your doctor on what you do then inform the company on what you're taking. I would suggest having a letter from the doctor and file it with the company and carry a copy with you.

If anyone has found any other regulation or law please post it.
