Alright ya'll...
My husband's year came up from Stevens Transport, and he's been looking around for a local driving job. His uncle worked in HR for 30 years at SYSCO, so he wrote a killer recommendation for my husband, and SYSCO said "Yes, we'll hire you....when you have 18 months experience".
So...we talked about it and decided on him staying on with Stevens until he finds another local job, or his 18 months hits, whichever comes first.
SYSCO called him three days later saying they've changed their minds and would like him to work for them NOW. Woo-hoo, right?
Well, wait a minute. I'm getting nervous now. What kind of company does that? Is this a preview of what's to come? Shaky management and poor communication? Geez.
Does anyone have feedback about SYSCO? We know it's foodservice/reefer, and that he'll be unloading, and starting early. What about the stuff that they WON'T tell us?
I'm going to be talking to one of the managers tomorrow and asking some questions of my own. I have the checklist from the top of the forum, but is there anything anyone can add?
Thanks so much!
Pretty sure it's SYSCO

Well I work for Sysco canada out of Toronto. I'v started there April 14th and it's VERY hard work. My day starts at 4am with a 30min ride to work. I'm in training mode right now and it's been crazy. I started today at 4am and I'm writing to u in bed ready to fall a sleep. Oh did I tell you that I JUST GOT HOME!! Canada is a great companie they will stand by you for training as long as it takes. The down side, the frown on u taking time off work sick, golf what ever. I'm 27 years old was 201 pounds and in one week droped to 188 trust me you need to be in shape or you will be lol. Pay up here, well mine is $800 to $900 a week take home but you must meet there dead lines for the deliverys. Your looking at 700 to 1000 pieces all hand bomb and at the end of the day your doing about 15,000 to 22,000LBS!! buy yourself. NO KIDDING!! Oh I'm also running 4 days a week only or you would run out of hours. It's fast pase VERY HARD WORK but the pay shows every ake and pain you get. I can see me doing this for a long time but I will stick it out. They also have a pension plan union Excellent coverage and home every night and I mean night lol. Hope this helps. Cheers!!

One thing about the food industry is that folks always have to eat, even when the economy craps out.

I drive for a company that does the same thing Sysco does. I also have a very good friend that has driven for them out of Chicago for over twenty years. I think because he had the reccomendation letter and because ther was a recent opening, that is why he got the call. You do have turnover in this particular segment of the trucking industry due to the demands of time, having to fingerprint every load ( you handle all 600-800 pieces on your trailer). IT IS NOT FOR EVERYONE. The money is excellent, even to start with my company it is around 56,000 per year. Sysco in some locations may be more. My friend probably brings in around 65,000 per year. Your husband probably knows all this. My only concern at 47 is how long can you last doing this physical work. I went from a 42 waist back down to a 40. Also feel better (except for some minor lower back and knee pain) then I ever have. I think it is worth trying out.
Good Luck, hope it all works out.
