I'm posting this for the people who are unaware of the information you leave behind on your hard drive. Some people get a new computer for xmas and are willing to part with the old computer. Usually, they give it to a relative or donate it to some organization. Many forget about the information they leave behind and don't attempt to erase it.
You should erase the hard drive as many times, as time permits you, or remove the hard drive from the system before donating it. :biggrin_2558:

    Ducks Thanks this.

In order to truly ensure no one can recover your data, the drive should be destroyed. There are forensic tools now available that can recover data that's been overwritten several times.

They can use electron miscroscopes to peel back magnetic layers one by one.

Far as I know only the NSA would do such a thing considering the costs.

I use PGP whole disc encryption. The sun will go supernova before cracking my password (series of muddied phrases) even with over a million guesses per second.

Used to be in the security biz while in the military. Met the investigator who found a way to recover data that's been overwritten. It's software driven, therefore, very inexpensive. ;)

I think that's Encase software. There are also physical means to recover.

I downloaded a bootleg version of Encase a few years ago. I was surprised what kind of stuff I found on my HD I thought was gone.
