Recently I rode along in one of my friend’s straight piped 95 w9. It was a great truck, but one thing that really stood out to me was how loud that turbo was. I’ve always preferred loud trucks lol, but this turbo was like nails on a chalk board. It was way too high pitched and it really hurt my brain for the 2 hours I was riding in it. Really you couldn’t even hear the engine, just to turbos the whole time.
So my question is, how can you prevent a high pitched turbo sound while still keeping a loud truck? I like that gurgling and rumbling noise, especially from the Detroit series 60s. I think cats just generally have loud turbos, but anyways how can you prevent a turbo from being too high pitched that you can’t even hear anything else?
    Here are some examples

This is in my opinion a too loud turbo

This is the perfect sound. That rumbling and gurgling noise with not too much turbo whistle

    Another good example

Just remove the turbo truck will run without it and your roll lots of coal and best of all no more of that annoying turbo whistle.

But really mufflers and sometimes air filter housings can be designed to reduce noise. Otherwise lots of dynamat in the cab helps reduce noise inside.

I prefer it to whistle, it's working. Like dwarves whistling while they work.

First question what year engine in the 95 KW? If it sounds like the first video than I'm guessing it's a 98 up 12.7 with a vgt turbo. Put an old non waste gate turbo on it and program it and reprogram it and that should fix the turbo whine. Or check for boost leaks.

    FlaSwampRat Thanks this.

Me i love the turbo whine. Really i love listening to an engine just work . its one of the most beautiful sounds ever created. More beautiful than the most beautiful orchestral symphony

I like the middle video the best. That truck has 7 or 8 inch straight pipes and something like 3.90 axle gears unless he was empty.
