Numbers all depend on the student. If they're willing to learn and work you'll do fine if they're not then you'll run into trouble. The first week or 2 usually starts out slow let the get accustom to driving tarping strapping ect. My dispatcher knows not to send me long loads during that period of time that's when I do most of the teaching abou securement. After that tho I like to run hard and usually my students do to. I give them a few extra hundred a week based off miles. Even though I'm already paying the 600 a week to them. For me it's a bad week if it's under 3k bring home with a student on my truck. Any more questions ask away

    Thank you for sharing...

So I'm guessing you're a flatbed trainer at Prime... still with 1 year experience? I applaud you for making the moves to earn more money quickly on your path.
On Primes website it says trainees earn $700, is it less ($600) for flatbed or what?

What kinda rates are you getting there... as in long term averages on loads there?

Doesn't students have to knock out 30000 miles before they get their own truck and are out on their own?
How do you figure your own home time and trainees home time through that process?

Yes flatbed. On my settlements they take out about 700 but the student gets 12 cents a mile

Sorry hit send to quick. The students get 600 or 12 cents a mile whichever is greater that's before taxes of course. They have to have 30k miles if they already did PSD which is get their permit and drive 10k miles then get the CDL if they come in from a school or no experience it's 40k miles. Those miles are all dispatched miles loaded and empty whether the student or trainer is driving. With home time it's ideal to find a student who lives near you but that usually doesn't happen. If were coming thru my house or theirs I'll stop for what time allows. But I'm focused on getting myself home more than a student. If you go home for longer than a few days prime likes you to put them up in a hotel. Now if there's a special occasion such as a kids bday or something I'll try and get them home for that. Utimalty my goal is to get them off my truck as quickly as possible when they're ready. That way they can start making their own money. Usually it's about 2 months on the truck. After I drop them off I'll go home for a week or two then come back out and run solo till they have another one ready. The student I have now will be the last one till 2015 due to the holidays he'll be off my truck a week before thanksgiving. You don't want to have a student during the houldays cuz you have to get them home and then get yourself home. It also can take a while to get back to pick them up depending on freight. it can be a real pain in the ### sometimes but the money obviously makes it worth it.
My average load is about 1.50 solo and around 1.75 team. Just got to know where the good areas are and the bad areas.

You info on student pay rate is slightly outdated. The student now gets $700 a week/ 14 cents a mile. That changed about 1.5 months ago or so. Your settlements would show you exactly when that happened. Just look for the jump from $600 to $700.

Hmm need to call payroll. I wasn't told about that and I haven't had a student get over 600 a week. Don't want them getting shorted. Preciate the info.

    Thanks again for sharing.

    $1.50 for flatbed is low

However you make up for it when you got somebody in the truck.
How often do you get trainees? Are they overwhelmed with students or have too many trainers or is it balanced out there?

Still wondering why you're at $1.50 solo, is that before fuel surcharge?

As far as bad and good areas good.. are your runs totally random or can you pick and choose?

Say for example you tell Prime you only wanna run midwest or only wanna run short loads in the Northeast because they pay well?
How much control/say do you have in your runs and areas to work?

You can ask your FM to keep you in a certain area, but it does depend on what's available. Just because YOU think a certain area is "good" doesn't mean there isn't better freight in the system outside of your "good area."

well generally some areas are better than others... however I understand there's always a hot load at any moment anywhere.
