    Tiny you are wrong if you wont to be a instructor you only have to take 1 class for both... But if you want to be a trainer it is a 4 hour class on tuesdays only

    Just an FYI. If your man is in the instruction phase his instructor is not to sleep while the student is at the wheel. This would be a good reason for a new instructor.

    As for backing. It is hard to get backing in while on the road. We did some. Tried to find places for extra practice but it was hard to find a place

    Pretrip is normally not taught by the instructor It is self taught and gone over with the instructor a few times.

    The instructor has a big $ reason to get your man to trifecta.

    Also your man is supposed to call FM once a week. This is the time to mention any concerns he has with his instruction

    I would tell him just to grit his teeth and get thru the test. After that have himself assigned to a different truck for the training phase.

    Yes, it is wrong for the instructor to sleep. I could let it slide a bit if it is dozing off in the passenger seat. Inexcusable if the instructor is climbing into the sleeper.

    As for Pre trip. He has the guide sheets right? My instructor walked me thru it once. Then left me to learn it on my own. Told me it was my choice to get up and practice. When I told him I was ready he tested me. Condition was that if I failed his test he would force me to pretrip everytime we stopped rather than let it be my choice to practice.

    We did do ALOT of backing practice on the road, however I have heard from many instructors that they prefer to wait and practice on the pad. Conversely many students complain that they wanted more backing on the road before their test.

    I look at the course and I commented to Sazook the other day that I'm not sure how good I would do with cones now that I am 3 years removed from my test. Give me 13+ foot tall cones! I have absolute faith I wouldn't hit anything, but I'd have to get out and look a couple times to get that bumper in the box without going past the final cone in the alley dock.

    Tell him to stay positive and get thru the test. The instructor has a very good monetary reason for him to pass the test. Pass it and then request another trainer. Don't be mean about about it, just have him express that he doesn't think things will work out.

    Just do what I do. Tell the student you're going to demo the maneuver for him, and then get behind the drivers seat, get confused for a few minutes, tell the student you're going to show him what not to do first, and then figure out how it works!

    I'm an Alaskan living in Michigan and can tell you that no trucking company is going to make that trip. It is much less expensive and just as time-efficient to use the barges out of Seattle, so if a company has goods for or from Alaska (household goods, for example, and lots of ocean-going containers) the truck will go to Seattle for the drop and pickup. From there, the container or van gets on a barge and heads for Anchorage.

    Driving anything up the Alaskan Highway is risky and very, very expensive. Break down there and you're gonna be waiting a very long time for help. And in the winter, temperatures in the interior of British Columbia can drop to -60F. Yup. Sixty degrees below zero.

    DD, When/Where were you living up north. Lived in Fairbanks till 98. All my stuff went up and down via the Barges and Ferry. Came out of Fairbanks in January. That was an interesting trip :biggrin_2552:

    I moved up in 1975 and away in 2007. I lived in Homer, Anchorage, and Bethel. I even voted for Sarah Palin because of who she replaced. Frank Murkowski was an arrogant, selfish, Washington-oriented idiot. Then Sarah got the spotlight and money...I would not vote for her for school board now.

    I have been on most ferry routes many times. I did it for relaxation and therapy. I love ships, especially those ships. I've been between Whittier and Bellingham four times in both directions and have NEVER been on a cruise ship. Nor will I. Bleh.
