I can't tell you for sure what the law is, all I can do is direct you to the
    fmcsa website.

    http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/

You can search this site and hopefully find the answer.

    Good luck!

I did a move once, across five states with a privately owned 26' truck. You are a moving magnet to DOT. Keep in mind, in this day and age, they are looking for drug runners. I was pulled over three different times during that move and every time they were looking for drugs. I even had one who tried to give me a ticket for not having a DOT number, because he was mad they didn't have nothing on me. I told him he was wasting his time because you don't need a number when using it as a private owned truck and not for commercial business. I had to pull out FMSCA book and show him. I'm not trying to scare ya but be prepared for it.

I'm thinking of driving hours other than 8-5

That's a good point . Many state DOT inspectors really don't know the law . Pick up an FMCSA handbook at a fuelstop , find and mark the appropriate regs , and keep it handy .

    What did you do?
I know if its your car, you should lock the door and NOT consent to a search unless they have a warrant.
Is it the same with a big truck?

I had nothing to hide and let them. They brought out the dogs and briefly looked in the cargo area. It was either let them search or be held up til they brought a search warrant. You pretty much have no choice, either way they are going to search you. Saying No, just gives them more intuition to want, to search you. It's not a right to drive on the highways, you have there permission. Just like your drivers license.

As a private , not for hire carrier you are not regulated by FMCSA . With a commercial truck they enter not to search but to inspect . I read a case where they were inspecting a truck driven by a couple of Mexican brothers . The inspector was checking the sleeper and didn't see restraints . He lifted the bunk to see if the restraints had slipped under it and found a bunch of marijuana . The brothers' attorney said it was an illegal search . The judge said the drugs were found in a proper inspection procedure . They were convicted and sentenced .
