I had the hardest time renewing my tag this year. spent 40 min on the phone with irp rep in Montgomery al. this is what I found out.since I have not had any miles outside of my home state in the last 2 years I could not get any other states on my cab card except for my home state of AL. sound crazy? I only have 8 states anyway. the computer sys would not let me renew, so I called the state. she said I need to get a AL state tag. I told her I may want to or need to go into other states at any given time. she told me to then get a permit to travel outside my state! I said look I have not left my state cause I have not needed to, I have a dedicated run, but I can lose that run at any time & may have to go outside of AL.
she replied if you have not gone out of AL in 2 years your not going to & we will not override to meet your request. she said unless I could prove in writing that I am going to be going out of my state I cannot do a straight renewal. I asked you mean because I have NOT left the state of AL in 2 years that I CANNOT leave the state? she said, yes, cause I had no miles in any state other than my own, so I am being restricted.
she mentioned I could go to the nearest state & buy fuel with my truck & send that in as proof that I do go out of the state. I told her that's stupid for 1 how does one prove he is going to go out of state? I can prove where I been, I cannot prove that I will be going or doing anything in the future. we went back & forth. then I said so if I just lied on the online mileage & put that I had 50 miles in another state, any other state I would be good to go? she said we never ask anyone to lie.
I told her YES YOU DO! it was not long ago where if a o/o had NO miles in a state he would have to put estimated miles. she said yes estimated but not actual. I said yes a lie. if I never drove in a state, but the sys says that particular state has a min mile I had to put down the miles WHEN THERE WERE NO MILES driven. I could not put down ZERO miles. each state had their own mile chart putting down any miles in a state where I did not go into is a lie. now your saying I have to prove to you the state that I will be going out of my home state to get a renewal? yes was the reply.
it is a good thing that I live in the same town for over 22 years & my neighbor who was mayor for over 20 years & was elected as a legislator in Montgomery dist 5. that I can get things resolved. going to the dinners & fundraisers got me aquainted with all of the senators, congressmen, e.t.c. but to some one else this could be a nightmare.

I understood that as of January all states are automatically on your irp.

As of January 1, if you have an apportioned plate you will have all 48 states and the Canadian provinces on your cab card. Last year I took a number of states off my cab card. I got tired of being penalized for having states on my cab card that I was not traveling. That changed in January. I am in the process of renewing my base plate this month. There are no longer going to be estimated miles. The new system operates similar to IFTA in that we only pay a fee for miles run in particular states. If we don't have any miles in a state, then we don't pay anything for having that state on our cab card. This new program makes more sense than what we have had to deal with previously.

yeah the rep told me about the elimination of estimated miles, that I figured out on comp when that option was gone. she got sarcastic & said look I don't know to explain this to you... YOU have 2 choices, either get a state tag or send proof in writing that you WILL be traveling outside of your state. told her YOU look I am not a illegal foreigner asking to travel all over the U.S. without a passport. I went a little farther & said next you'll be telling me because I have not driven my personal vehicle out of my state, that I am not allowed to leave unless I can prove that I have a need to leave in the future. I was polite but running out of patience. anyway... had to vent..

I wonder if the number of truck companies dropping Calif***ya from their cab card in protest of the ridiculous CARB regulations (as well as other truck-unfriendly states) had anything to do with that change? A massive decline in cab card registrations sends a message...and taking away the ability to send that message lets the regulators think nobody is against their actions.
heavyhaulerss and scottied67 Thank this. -

I would say it did have an impact. I and several others I know who run their own authority took California and most of the western states off our cabcards. I also took everything east of the Hudson off my cab card. It did save some money, but not quite as much as I would have expected. This year my base plate rate went down considerably without having to pay estimated miles and being penalized for not running in some states. I doubt that I will run in the states I previously took off, but it is an option should a really good paying load come up. I did turn a couple of good paying loads down this last year due to not having them on my cab card. I didn't want the hassle and expense of having to add those states to my cab card and/or stop and buy an expensive trip permit. Hopefully, this will work out well. At least we will only pay for miles in states where we actually ran.
