I just bought a new truck that requires DEF. Imagine my surprise when I get to the Petro to get fuel. I cannot pay at the pump for the DEF and most places do not have DEF at all pumps. I am leased to Landstar and use a Comdata fuel card. I have to pump my fuel, go into prepay with cash for DEF (standing in line and blocking fuel lane), pump the DEF, and then go back in (standing in line blocking the fuel lane) to get refund. This is ridiculous! It takes me twice as long to get fuel now! DEF has been around for 4 years I would not think it should be this difficult to purchase DEF. Thankfully I only have to get it every other fill up.
Is every driver having to do this or is this just Comdata, Landstar, or certain truck stops who are behind the times?

I use comdata and pay at the pump. It should ask you if you want def just press yes.

I don't know what pumps you go to but 100% of pumps I go to from coast to coast have Def and you DON'T have to go in to prepay. It usually asks you if you want Def press yes. If there is no option the procedure is listed on the pump. You press a button and the magic Def fairy asks what you want you simply tell the fairy you need the Def turned on and abracadabra it's on
Arkansas Frost Thanks this. -
Actually there are quite a few TS that do not have def at pumps. I field at a flying j the other day that didn't have it. But I usually top mine off anytime I fuel so I never run low. Melton will terminate us if we run out because they say it costs about $10k at cummins to get it repaired.

What truck stops do you use and what trucking company do you work with? I called Comdata's customer service and was told that Landstar just has to call Comdata and authorize the purchase of DEF. I have told several people at Landstar and have been told that this is not true and that at best I could get a cash advance from the card or buy it under product code 24. I have tried to use the code 24 at several TA and Petros and they just look at like I am nuts. Today, I received a email from Landstar wanting to know who at Comdata told me that it was up to Landstar to authorize. They acted like I was lying to them. I am hoping I get several responses to this thread then I will contact Comdata again and get more specific information. Than I will send it to Landstar.

I work for Melton. We primarily use loves,p/fj or from what I have seen that's mostly who we use. I have stopped at petro once and had no issue there.

Also you may have to get the box def authorized but highly doubtful if you do it at pump.

I love my non-DEF '09, I love my non-DEF '09, I love my non-DEF '09...
Anything PACCAR cost a lot to fix. I'd get a bottle of the stuff, and throw it in the side box if I were you...
We use Comdata, and it's just part of the fueling procedure that you should be used to. They added a screen after you select your diesel (tractor or reefer) that asks if you want to pump DEF. Just do it as part of your normal fuel-up, but make sure you pump your tractor fuel first, and fer gawd's sake don't put that cat pee in your fuel tank! BTW, I hope they put your DEF tank on the driver's side. There are a bunch of KWs out there that someone screwed that up on.
Some truckstops don't have DEF at all pumps... I was in the TA at Concordia MO the other day, and this is the case... only 2 out of 10 or so pumps. Other truckstops are still changing out their pumps to get it out on the fuel islands. The TA in Nashville is just finishing up construction for example.
A final word... my fleet's been using 2010 EPA engines for 3 years now, and there is a problem that many don't know about. I just started hearing about this last fall. It seems some of the DEF systems (not sure if this goes to all manufacturers) use some compressed air as part of the DEF delivery system. If moisture from the compressed air gets into the system it can cause the urea to crystalize out of water suspension in the tubing... and partially or totally block the DEF fluid from being pumped into the exhaust. I also understand this is expensive to fix. My fleet has been haranguing our drivers to drain their air tanks daily... that's the cure. Probably should add it to the "definitely to do on the pretrip" list besides stare at your tires for awhile while chuggin' some more coffee. -
We don't buy it by the box. Like I said they told us to top it while fueling. 3k miles to tank, there is a good chance even if I fuel at a place that doesn't have it ill find it at next one and top it there. So far I haven't got below 7/8 of a tank on it.

Call up LS. If you didn't originally require def your card probably isnt activated to buy it. Just let them no they need to activate it so you can buy def at the pump.
