I think that a professional driver and a career driver are the same. I think it is just different words to describe someone who is making a career of trucking, (or other type of driving.) I think the terms are interchangeable.
I also think you can have long time drivers that are NOT career or professional drivers. The steering wheel holders who take no pride in their work, do their best to cheat the logs, do pretty much as they please, to hell with the law, the load, safety, or the company. They last until the screw up bad enough to get fired. Many of them last for many years before this happens.
Being a "career driver" does not necessarily mean that driving is the only job, or career, that a person has had. I know many people who have had two, three, four or more careers in their working life time.
To me, it means that you care about what you are doing, you take pride in doing a good safe job, you keep yourself and your truck clean. You make you P & D's on time, you know when to shut down, and when you can push it. You keep your paper work in order, and turned in, in a timely manner. Oh heck, I could go on and on here at lenght, but I'll post this and let somebody else take it from here. -
To me it's more simply stated as
(1) You have a Trucker
(2) You have a driver...... -

Linguistics being a finer tool of mine, I'll make an effort in short:
Professional: All the things Don said; caring, effort, management and so forth, but also a service mentality. Drivers should be providing a service to their customers and the company they drive for foremost. This would include attitude and appearance as well as timeliness.
Career: Usually a professional who intends to stay in the business for life. OTOH, a career driver may not be all that professional in his performance, as lassitude, complacency, or disagreements with his company may color his attitude, but he remains in the seat regardless.RickG Thanks this. -
