You didn't mention what state this was in, and you don't have your location on your profile. So I will say this: That D.O.T. officer was wrong.
The NATIONAL law is...you are required to CARRY and be able to show 7 days logs at any given time. Your COMPANY is required to HOLD and be able to show 6 months of logs at any given time.
Even if there is absolutely nothing else to show on those previous 6 days...you have to be able to show just that.
You either came across an officer that doesn't know the regulations...or was just plain lazy. I'm guessing the latter.

If you are considered 100 air mile exempt then you do not have to bring the past 7 days. It is covered in the DOT guidance on HOS.
