it's me again...
I get so aggravated at work with some of those guys. I not trying to be daft, honest.
y'all friendly group, and I've learned proper name for things better here, even when I was in school! (reciently learned what a 'super 10' is)
I ask them this stuff, really! who do you ask if not your co-workers and shop mechanics? For a response I get:
"it's old"
"it's just different"
"it's doesnt matter/you don't need to know, you just need to know who to tell when you having a problem with it". (the owner / boss told me that one, and just giggled and laughed, lol)
I just want to know what it is:
older Mack truck, duel axle, basic dump truck. no clue actual age yet.
haven't actually seen inside the cab (drive it tomorrow). I'm told is "duel stick". one stick is your basic 1-5 gears. the other stick is low, high, and reverse. the second stick is taller and slimmer then the gear shifter.
I was told to run the pto for the bed, the high/low stick was to be in neutral, and the gear in first or second (tho 3 out of 4 folks telling me how to operate it says they use second or third). air latch on the door same as other I've driven.
I'm told is easy to drive, and is Mr. M's, one of my boss', favorite to drive. I'm just curious if age actually why this one has different type of shifting? or what type or name of this gear shifter?
proper name?

Consider that slimmer stick like your pre-selector switch on a ten speed. 1-5 neutral shift to high 6-10.
Leaving it in neutral but the gear in gear will stop the part of the transmission the pto attaches to when engaging I believe. I haven't driven one since the farm thirty some odd years ago and I was like 8 or 10 then so........ -

Hard to tell from the description but it sounds like a Mack 5 or 6 speed. When dumping the gear used in the main box will determine how fast the pto turns. So the dump bed will go up faster in third gear than in first. I hope that helps.

WHAT I WILL SAY VERY STRONGLY--is since you are a new driver--I would say go back to your boss--and politley tell him you aren't completely comfortable with this set up and would like some more info--possible even ride with him for a little bit so it can be explained to you--and if it really is his FAVORITE truck he should appreciate this and help you--if not well then I'll hold my tongue--since it is Sunday!
Although the scenario you are describing is something I was all too familiar with a loooooooong time ago!
I can say-- I come from a very old school trucking family(and I'm getting pretty #### old myself LOL)and remember the days when NEW drivers were supposed to be seen and not heard! Of course the other side of that was guys were constantly taking heat for tearing stuff up--especially with the older gear boxes--
Oh and by the way--once you get it figured out--they really aren't all that tough--just takes some getting used to!

I never heard of a PTO being driven off the final drive but that doesn't mean it couldn't. Though pump's are set to run at a certain RPM so I would suggest using the gears specified to limit wear. -
The old R model I drove had a tag on it that told you what gears to use for the PTO, I forget now what that range was, but it said you could spin the PTO too fast (which is totally understandable).
Tazz I think what Olhand said was the best answer, it's a toss up between what you and I said, I think the OP needs to ask the boss or look for tags on the truck to find out which transmission is actually in it.'olhand Thanks this. -
sounds to me like a Mack 5sp twin stick
5sp on 1 stick and hi-lo-rev and neutral on the other
hi for the road--- 1-2-3-4-5
lo for off road--- 1-2-3-4-5
reverse--1-2-3-4-5
leave it in neutral and you should have 5 differant speeds for the pto
the old Mack 5 speeds are easy to drive and are very forgivingmsfern29 Thanks this. -
Well, it definately wouldn't be out of the ordinary to ask. It's not like they are used everywhere today.
Sounds to me like chopper said. It is set up like a 4wd with a transfer case/pto setup. Except this transfer case has Hi Lo and reverse and the FWD is the PTO.
