I just received my class A license about a month ago now, and driving was good. Backing up the single trailer etc... cake, well at least easy enough for me to pass I feel confident. I had a couple interviews here in town to do runs to the next city over. Anyways I have the doubles and triples endorsement and obviously from the book and those procedures seems easy enough, but if I do in fact get this position I just don't want to look stupid staging the second trailer. I am just looking for advice and opinions. Is it common to have to back up straight with two trailers? It seems to me that unless its obviously a straight line and not far to back you would unhook double from the 5th wheel dolly pull up unhook from the single and then connect to the other trailer and put it wherever it needs to be when offloaded.

    thanks

Well your not in a truck competition so keep things simple.Pull into the yard.Drop your kite.Take your lead, with your dolly over to where ever you stage the dollies and drop the dolly.Put your lead in a door and go back and put your kite in a door.My company limits time of breaking a set to 15 minutes which includes post trip. You won't save much time by trying to get the kite lined up at a door when your still a set.

It's not common to back up doubles. Only a few can do it for any length of area, You saw the video. They didn't back all that far and what I could see they only had to back about 20 feet or so. It was more like a truck rodeo.

It would take you more time then to just break the set down and place the boxes where they want them. I would just pull up to where it's flat, put the landing gear down on the first box. Unhook all the cables and hoses from the trailer pull the fifth wheel handle and drop the set. Move the trator away some or drive over to where they keep the gears. Unhook your gear. Go get the front box and place it where they want it.

Do that to the next box or park the set, whatever they want. It's been about 15 years since I've done it but once you get into the groove you can have broke down and re-hook with a good inspection at around 15 minutes. Just make sure your hoses and wire cable are secure and hooked up the way they want them to be. We had to carry our own hoses so I had a cheat glad hand when I needed it. But you don't want to get caught on the road with no brakes to the gear.
