I've got a 2013 Prostar, Maxxforce engine. When it tries to do a "rolling" regen, I have reduced power and BLACK smoke pours out of the pipe. After about an hour of smoking like a freight train and limping down the road, the "parked regen" warning comes on. I pull over, begin the parked regen, and white smoke starts coming from under the right side of the cab. It looks like it's coming from that braided pipe. No smoke of any color comes out the stack during the parked regen. Frankly, the amount of white smoke coming from under the cab seems minimal. After 30-45 minutes, the parked regen is done and I can get back on the road at full power, and no more black smoke. I go through this once a day, for 3 days now.

I know I need to replace the leaking exhaust pipe under the cab that goes to the DPF. I can smell it periodically while driving. My question is, could this be the only problem? Or is there probably more that's wrong? Clogged DPF? Clogged stack? I'm trying to figure out where to begin before throwing money at it. Thanks!

Replace the leaking exhaust pipe before anything all new truck with dpf and def are very dependant on having no exhaust leak before the dpf of any kind any kind of leaks and will drop down proper temps also try to check the diesel doser make sure it's not plugged.

Thank you. That's pretty much what I was thinking-- get the leak fixed and go from there. I've got the pipe ordered. Should be in tomorrow.

careful withe clamp after the flex it needs to get replaced as well but usually welded onto the pipe so you have to cut the weld and replace it.

IMG_4532.JPG I thought it was welded underneath the clamp, but it was just rust. Broke free fairly easily. Thanks again. Now to go get the new one.

I drove a company truck 2013 prostar with maxxfoce. You could always tell when it was doing a regeneration going down the road. It would smoke like freight train. White smoke but it also sound like yours is not doing that. That's the reason a parked regn is needed. I'm not sure if the maxxfoce has a doser for active regening going down the road. But it was normal to see lots of smoke when it would Regen driving.

First time it happened I thought maybe the brakes were smoking or something was on fire. It was my first maxxfoce I drove. People behind me would pull out and pass me. I believe it was actually the grey ash from the soot being burned off is what I was seeing but not sure. Or it was just dumping so much diesel into the DPF it would just smoke like a freight train

LOL... yes, the amount of smoke is crazy. But mine is just plain BLACK. My thinking is that it is trying to do a regen, but because of the leak before the DPF, it just isn't hot enough to burn off the ash. At least that's what I'm hoping.

Any black smoke is generally a signal the DPF is actually cracked or broken. Grey/white or even bluish smoke during a regen is a sign of improper diesel oxidation either from a dirty or fault doser injector, or plugged or inefficient DOC, or combination of both. We recommend yearly DOC and DPF removal and cleaning. This is full bake and cleaning. Also at this time, the doser should be cleaned and spray tested.

I have a 2012 Pro Star with the Maxx Force 13 engin. My truck called for a parked regen every 200 mile or twice a day. There is a list of things you should do to get it fixed. First fix all the exhaust leaks. The smallest leak will effect the regen. Second have the DPF, DOC and Pre Doc cleaned and baked not just the DPF but all 3 parts. While it's apart check the Doser valve they carbon up and either stop spraying or they just dump the diesel fuel into the exhaust. Replace the valve and clean the opening. Once everything is clean and like New with no exhust leaks have the dealer do a DOC efficientcy test. They can check to make sure the temps are high enough within a certain timeframe. I went through all that and found my DOC was weak. It took to long to reach the desired temp. I changed it and went from parked regen every 200 miles to not having done one yet in 60,000 mile. Good luck
