So, forgive me for asking this dumb question. First let me say that I'm in no way bashing swift, nor do I want this thread to be a forum for bashing swift, but that's not up to me...lol. I'm actually going to Willis Shaw's training program. My question...I was just on PTDI's website and looked at the current certified training programs. Swift was listed in every state that they have facilities in. Also, most everyone on here hails schools and/or companies that are PTDI certified. So if this is the case, why is it that the general consensus is that swift has a horrible training program and that the majority of the drivers that they turn out are terrible? I realize that they are a huge company and I'm convinced there are good quality drivers there, so I'm not trying to make a negative post.
Also, I'm asking because WSE's training isn't listed with PTDI yet on this forum and in talking with drivers, most agree that WSE turns out good drivers overall.
Is this because of the ratio of drivers vs. drivers between swift and wse is so vast?
And having said that does that also mean that the student/trainer ratio is lower with WSE so they have more close contact training?
Just wondering..![]()

I may have discovered an answer to my own question. I'm going up to Boise to attend Willis Shaw's CDL training and otr training program on the 20th of this month. We have a class total of 6. I suppose that's why we're all staying in separate rooms...lol. We'll also have 3 instructors so that's 2/student...I think I'll like this place!!

That all said... there are many happy with the training and work at Swift, and there is good and bad with all these companies... lips move, lies are spoken. Bottom line with Swift and others (Central Ref., Covenant, CRE, Warner and others...) is the OTR trainer... training will suck if you are being trained by some guy who's driven for only 6 months or a year. I want to train with a guy who's the best...or at the least, extremely experienced and competent... at least OTR 2 years experience. Companies like Swift don't have that many around that long because they don't WANT them around that long...they get paid more and the company makes less... This equals fewer good experienced trainers, which means lousy training, thus lousy new drivers. -
I got lucky: Had a mentor that had been driving for 22 years. I'm up to two. No longer with Swift, but it's a great place to get the experience and then move on in a year or two. Use them for whatever you can! They will use you and treat you like crap, but it doesn't mean you won't benefit from the experience. When you leave them, and you will, at least you will see that after a little of the hard knocks, you're able to get a decent job with a reputable company. Best wishes and stay safe.
