Every now and then while reading around the internet on different trucking sites or while talking to drivers that have just started out in this industry, the discussion of backing maneuvers comes up. Long story short, why do some drivers feel bad about having to perform a pull-up when backing like it's some taboo thing? Is it an ego thing, because I really don't understand. Personally, I would perform as many pull-ups as necessary in an effort to properly align the trailer onto various loading docks, ramps, and portable ramps. The serpentine maneuver works wonders in my opinion!

Performing pull-ups and "getting out and looking" while backing should never be avoided, or looked down upon as a "newbie thing" by veteran drivers, and should be a part of your backing "checklist".

'K, that's all that I wanted, so you all continue to drive safe and never take shortcuts in your work performance! :biggrin_25525:

I would rather jump in and out of truck 3 or more times, than rip a fender off, once. Pullups are free, fenders can cost a job.

This is nothing but SUPERTRUCKER hogwash. I'm not afraid to "Get Out And Look"/pull up as many times as it takes to enter a dock safely. I don't know anyone that is worried about looking like a "newb" by doing the same. These are the same guys you'll see in a ditch...that have just passed you while dogging you for driving slow in a snowstorm/icy road. ....you have your "smart alecks" everywhere.
Sometimes I'm absolutely perfect in my setup and other times...I CAN'T BACK WORTH A DARN. I think we all have "those days".

I guess it comes down to how I feel, about what people think of me jumping in and out of the truck like crazy doing pull-ups and resets. Its just like my tattoos and being on a bike, people stare, look at the leather, the tats and stare and whisper....The thing is, they don't understand how much I really don't give a (insert expletive) I don't care what they think. Same thing with trucking, if I gotta do it 90 times, then so be it. Homeboy in the truck next to me doesn't like it? Well...he COULD have helped:biggrin_25525:

My belief is that it comes down to this...

While in "school", you are given only so many pull-ups, per parking maneuver, or you fail that one.
Some of these graduates, then carry that over into their every-day work. IMHO

And, yeah, I believe there are also those who believe themselves to be "too cool", to actually use common sense, and G.O.A.L.

tonight i had to back a pup in to a pitch black dock around 11pm.....im not great at backing pups

the dock had one of those #### extra wide dock plates thats almost as wide as the trailer, so you have to line it up perfect or they wont be able to get the plate up

i wont even lie, i think i pulled up like 6 times lol

    i can put a 48 or 53 footer in most docks with 0 1 or 2 pull ups....tonight was a little different

it's an "ego trip" to be able to do any backing maneuver in "one shot". some feel as though if they do not get the truck backed up in that "proverbial one shot" then they are lower than a student....

i tell my students that if I HAVE TO take 1 or 20 pull ups, SO WHAT...???? you do not want to hit anything.....

there are days when one can back up with no pull ups, ok good for him/her THAT TIME.....

but we all have bad days don't we...??? so a pull up (or more) sometimes has to be done....our timing is off, we are tired, there are obstacles in the way, whatever....

and yes, some students may carry over the mentality that they only have "so many pull ups", but that in of itself is NOT TRUE of the schools, but of the DMV's and test day for the license.....at school, the students are ENCOURAGED to Get Out And Look, several times......

so in the end, it's bruising one's ego when he feels he HAS to back up in one shot, showing off in essence to anyone watching him.....

i think a few ego's SHOULD BE BRUISED from time to time.......

It's most likely not too cool, it's probably too lazy. Driving 10 hours, didn't get much sleep before that but it didn't count toward hours, technically, if you get my drift, you've been there. You get to your place of delivery and you're about to collapse from exhaustion. It's stormy, it's four in the morning, it's the east coast (first time you've been there), it's a commercial delivery location (never have seen this docking situation). Anyways, you pull forward into a dead end, and have to back out with so many obstacles, your tired brain starts to freak out. Mistake happens, and it involves tree branches and you, trailer height and you, tree gravity and you, that sucked......The world is three dimensional.
