I am going to start pulling a spread axle reefer and want to bump up my registered weight to 84,000. My lanes will be from the northwest to either Chicago area or to the Phoenix area. I have heard that some states (WI and MN) will allow you to bump it up but will still write you a ticket for being over 80,000. So my question is.....what states will allow me to run over 80,000 and which states will not, no way, never happen, not in a million years. Thanks for all your help.

i don't consider chicago or phoenix to be in the northwest. southeast and middle north probably.
i've heard arizona is a no way state. much like cali. the only overweight i hauled. boss made me go around cajoun and st.george, utah scales. that load went from long beach to billings, mt.
i did haul a load that went with another load, and that other load was a heavy haul. both loads going from long beach to rock springs, wy. but i have no idea on the heavyhaul routing.
i'm with the 3rd company. none of them i worked for would take an overweight into arizona. said it's too much hassle. -
Good luck driver. I hope your delivery times are spaced out far enough so you can afford the time delays you'll be put through.

It's evident you did not read my post, Snowwy, I posted my lane is FROM the NORTHWEST to EITHER CHICAGO OR PHOENIX. Not sure of the delays you speak of moraramis?

Why do you want to bump your reg weight to 84K ?
-
More freight, more weight, more revenue. Actually that way I can also haul some of the heavier dry loads. My empty weight will be around 36500-37000. Pretty heavy.

You are allowed 80k on the interstate with 5 axles, anymore than that & you have to be permitted.
You can't get a permit for a load that can be hauled legally weightwise ,such as a load of produce. -

It is amazing how many people answer questions around here without bothering to read the question.
I have a flat spread, and have 84 for all the north western states,.
I was told/assumed I was good for 84 in those states, however a month ago at the I 90 ID coup, I was called in for 36500 on the wagon 78500 gross.
That guy told me that I needed a trip permit for anything over 80 even though I had 84 listed on my IRP.
I was also told?? that IA does not allow 84 on the interstate, but does allow it on the state routes.
Like all the rules and regs confusing to say the least, and costly no matter what you think. -
I got ticketed in WY for being over on my rear trlr tandem. Same deal. $250.00 to an ahole.
