Would love some input from owner operators in the Prairies pulling hopper bottoms btrains. I'm looking for some good companies in Saskatchewan, I'm trying to figure out what I would possibly take home after expenses. I'm looking for a used truck, possibly used trailer down the road. How are the rates? What are you taking home after expenses? How do you like the work? Seems like all flat ground to me. Doesn't seem like the grain industries really affected by the economic downturn right now. Thanks.

She was a cut throat industry 3 years ago. Haven't paid much attention since. All I can say is a friend of mine was a one truck operation, truck and b's paid for. Always busy, everyday he maximized his time. He packed it in due to competition cutting rates. And if anyone knows a farmer they'll drop u for a nickel a bushel cheaper. Until the rates were cut he was making a decent living. Not getting rich but decent.
Hope this little bit of info is useful.

Yep. I would not work for a farmer, trucking or otherwise. And if I'm hauling hoppers with ag, I'm working indirectly for them. I've had guys offer to do my job for less salary (worked on ranches most of my life, the odd farm) and the farmer let me go.

Changed it on 63, the highway to Hell. Ahem, I mean to Ft Mac.
I should have added, not all farmers are like that either. Just the ones I've been around. Ranchers seem to be better but can still screw around. And I've also seen some lazy ### farmers. Also seen some that just never stop.

Lowmax. I agree to a certain degree. My friend provided excellent service and fair prices for a few years. Until a larger 40-50 trailer company moved into the area. I'm not sure what the rate difference was but it was enough to turn him away from doing it anymore. Funny thing his customer base was mostly friends and neighbours. Go figure
