    Hi all,

Brand new here on the forums so a BIG hello to everyone.

Anyways I was driving local in southern California delivering heavy construction equipment on a lowbed flat. Before that I was driving a Truck & Transfer doing sand, rock & gravel locally. Business has been real bad with the equipment hauling or anything construction related for that matter..

Took a pay cut at the first of the year. Went from 20 bucks an hour to 18. But what was worse, my hours are not there anymore. Doing maybe 25 - 30 hours a week tops. So I made the decision to leave my company and join the pumpkin patch. I start orientation in Fontana on August 22nd. Will be doing regional short haul supposedly within a 500 mile radius.

So far Schneider has been very professional and pleasant on the phone and they have always returned e mails and phone calls in a very timely manner. Time will tell.

Schneider told me they could not give me credit for driving a Truck & Transfer for the past 10 years even though it requires a class A CDL but they can give me credit for doing the lowboy for the past 3 years and they will start me at 35 cpm.

I asked them what do they start a newbie out of driving school and they told me 29 CPM. So I would have to assume that 35 CPM for a local experienced class A driver going solo short haul is about standard or average for the industry, yes ? no ? maybe ?

Your comments or opinions are always welcome and again a BIG hello to everyone ..... and a huggs to the ladies :)

    Welcome to the bigtruck board!!

For 3 years experience that's about right for a big company. Plus a 500 mile radius isn't that far. I think ya did fine, but I may be a bit biased, I was there 1 1/2 years, and would go back in a heartbeat.
I've never been to Fontana, but I have to assume the way you've been treated so far, is just what you'll find there. I know there are guys who think otherwise, but I was there. I never felt mislead or lied to, and that's a biggy. You are not expected to cheat your logs, in fact most trucks have the electronic logs.
You could have done much worse than these guys. They really are for real.:biggrin_25525:

Thanks Johnday for the input :)

Yup They told me all the trucks are electronic logs now.

When they sent me in to take my urine and hair follicle drug test last week and being I did not keep a copy of the long form (the one you mail in to the DMV) for my current medical card, which will not expire for another year, they said go take a new CDL physical while you are there for the drug test and we will pay for it. I thought that was pretty cool being I am not officially hired yet but it is done and payed for.

Plus I see their trucks on the freeways around here all the time and the tractors all look pretty good. I really have not seen any ratty, beat up tractors yet and they all appear to look clean or recently washed. Sure, some of the trailers look a lil beat up but no biggey to me with that.

I know little of Pumkin's pay and stuff like that but I do know one thing, it's the only "training company" that trains it's drivers the right way. Good luck

Welcome Daveb951 to the Truckers Report!

I don't know about Pumpkin but from a family member recently employeed with another company- brandnewbie in Feb. was started at .32CPM and raised to .33CPM after a few months. From what I have been reading on here the ranges go from one extreme to another. The CPM is important but it's getting the miles to pay those CPM that is really important!! Doesn't help if you're sitting in a dock somewhere....

Best of luck!! and again Welcome!

:biggrin_255:I was trained by schinder, in fontana also, I feel they gave 110% to you, if you needed help, they were their, they really went the distance for some who were having a hard time, I did not realize how well I was trained till someone want me to drive for them and I could not change, the Schinder way was ingrained into me, never realized that other outfits had such bad habits, it's a wonder some of them are not dead or killing people left and right by there lack of common safety when driviing a truck. I would have stayed with schneider, but was needed closer to home.

I'll be heading for orientation in Charlotte in a week it looks like. I am glad to hear they are such a good training outfit. Just got my CDL and this is my first driving job. Peace
