    Hi All,
I am in the process of owning my first Truck. I just bought it online from NJ. I want to drive down to TX. SO what are the requirements to bring it down and register here. I am in process of leasing to Landstar but the paperwork is still going on. I want to pick up the truck next week. So please tell me the requirements such as how the title transfer works, how do i get plate, is it required. etc, Anything that i need to know please.
    thanks

Not sure if this is a by state thing but when i did the same thing I was given a 30-day plate that allowed me to move the tractor but not haul anything. This was provided by the dealer. If it was private party I would check with TX and NJ about how to do this. But my thought is it is fairly common.

And know someone that moved companies to LS and old company kept plates and LS did something that allowed temporty movement to orientation.

Also, if it was private party, call NJ dealer as if you are interested in tractor and ask that question.

This has been discussed a lot on here, might do a search. Get insurance on it, get a Bill of Sale from the seller and title, get in it and drive it home. Your not hauling any freight with it just bought it and bobtailing home. My understanding Landstar is not going to do anything with it until you get it inspected. When you get the title in your hands you will take it to your local tag office and have the title put in your name. If you are leasing to Landstar you can get your tag threw them that might be the cheapest and easiest thing to do.

And LS plates in IL, one of the most expensive. But some guys still pay twice what they would because they will deduct it over the year.

As others have mentioned, you should be able to get a temporary tag from the dealer and put it in the right side of the windshield. You should apply for your title. Normally, we will need to pay for our 2290 before being allowed to buy our base plates. That is currently not possible until Congress puts a budget together. You can either get your base plates and permits through Landstar or on your own in your home state. In order to plate it in your home state you will likely need a copy of your lease from Landstar. There is also a form which will usually need to be filled out and signed. If you want to have Landstar get your base plates and permits, you will need to give them a copy of your title, title application or bill of sale so that they can get your plates. If the individual whom you are buying your truck doesn't have a temporary tag, you could make a copy of the bill of sale and tape it to the right inside of your windshield.

You should be able to purchase liability insurance to get your home and to orientation. If you don't have an insurance source, you may check with OOIDA and see if they can bind temporary coverage. You can also get your unladen liability from them as well. Landstar requires unladen liability rather than bobtail. That may be all you need to protect yourself. Call and speak to their insurance people. Landstar used to have their own insurance company where owner operator could get their insurance. I don't know if you can get it through their people until you are under lease to Landstar.

Just an FYI as I just got off phone about this.

No state can hold your initial plate application because you have not paid the 2290 yet if you can prove that you have purchased within the last 60-days. Until 5-mins ago was going to hire a guy that was going to plate out of GA. And GA was telling him he needed 2290 but we all know that is not happening right now. For some reason the person he was dealing with could not understand this. Got a hold of a very nice man at the IRS that was going to help me out. When he found out the truck was purchased a week ago he flipped. Called while I was on the line and told the lady in GA A) not issuing 2290 now and B) can't require it if purchased less than 60-days ago.

On side note, not going to hire him because I heard him call the lady in GA some un called for names. Don't want him in front of a customer when things go wrong (like that ever happens :biggrin_25523:)

You don't want a driver representing you when they can't control themselves. There is no reason to start calling someone names such as that driver did to the woman in Georgia. I have no doubt that she was only doing what she was told to do and may not have been notified about the change in the 2290.
