There is zero excuse for not researching who your going to sign on to for 8 months or a year of your life.
Tonythetruckerdude and pattyj Thank this. -
Look, I know not everyone is going to be as smart as others who take the time to research the company they are wanting to go with, and those who don't invest time are going to be the next wave of newbies coming on here and bashing the very company that gave them an opportunity. I come from the old school where you are accountable for everything that happens to you in life.

I am new to the trucking industry. I was a teacher for four years and dealt with too many students who thought school was a place to hang out with their friends and act out. I decided that a career change was in order and before I did I asked around. My wife was a truck driver in the Army and granted its a different beast from the trucking industry, but she gave me some good advice. I also talked to other truck drivers who straight out said that truck drivers are the biggest whinners. They complain about everything but if you ask how long they have been in it they say 10 years. Well obviously something is going right or you would have left. I also researched companies and decided that no company is perfect and they all have issues. My goal is to drive OTR for a few years so I can get the miles and learn as much as I can. I hope to one day start my own company and hand it down to my daughter.

I agree as someone new entering this profession. Research, research, research is the key. I have spent alot of time on TTR reading jusy about every forum, talking to drivers, reading every news article I came across to gain as much information as I possibly could to make sure I know what I am getting into and make a sound decision. I know everyday I am driving will be a new learning experience. I have set myself a 1,2,3,5,10 year goals. If I continue to surround myself with positive people and continue to learn this profession, I should be able to attain my goals. I refuse to let other's attitude dicate mine. Every job has bump in the road that are out of your control, but if you remain calm and treat people like you want to be treated, everything will work its way out in the end. There are a lot of people on TTR that give great advise, insight to every day driving and there are others on here that have nothing good to say about anything.

Threads like this obscure the obvious.
Yes, you can take the P.T. Barnum tact and say, driver, you VOLUNTARILY signed up and there's a fool born every minute, right? That's the philosophy of hucksterism.
Or belly up to the obvious and, heaven forbid, advocate for change. Truth in recruiting, for example. You have companies in OTR that hire literally thousands every year and have 100% turnover. Hey! If we don't put a stop sign up here (like this is a 4-way corner, for example, that produces countless wrecks every year), we will continue to have mishaps and casualties like this.
When is enough, enough?
